First cook on my POS smoker!
« Reply #-1 on: February 24, 2013, 01:09:14 PM »
Went hog hunting this weekend & score was pigs won 1 to 0!
On my way home picked up a 5-6 lb pork butt & put on my new cooker.
First cook , 4th time to burn charcoal in it!
I may be foolish for buying a $69 cooker but I'm not stupid ::)
I wasn't going to ruin good meat till I got this cooker dialed in!
Loaded with about 8 lbs charcoal & a couple oak chunks & cruising right along about 250F

The butt turned out great , took a little more charcoal then expected 10 lbs but otherwise a good cook.
Borrowed a 12 in charcoal ring/fence I made for another cooker , think ill make a 14 in diameter for this cooker.
Going to hunting camp to become my " set & forget " slow smoker.

Smoke mine was not usable out of the box.
So much airflow from leaks the temp ran way too high.
It would've been very frustrating for a novice cooker.
I've got it running ok now & should be fine for L.A. Hunt camp.

Good to hear. The one I use has a huge gap between the middle and top section. I tried my best to get em back to round but I have a big wedge of hd aluminum foil that I have to wedge in there.

Now the one that my brother has hardly leaks at all and works real nice.......go figure..... >:( :D

Did you have to make any mods to it to get it tamed down & dialed in?

Whatever you did seemed to work for you. That butt sure looks pretty dang good!

Tightened door with a washer.
Made a gasket with high temp silicone between top & middle sections , & used  a charcoal ring.

Used Permatex high temp silicone ultra copper gasket material

For wings, that will be my "go to" smoker/grill...it is pretty versatile with smokin' and grillin'

Glad to see you have one LA...Maybe you can give me some good pointers

On my last cook, I had an apple mini-log snuggled up next to the charcoal and it smoked just right.
