Ash Vacuum
« Reply #-1 on: June 30, 2013, 12:22:45 PM »
I tried to post this yesterday but can't find it.  My apologizes if this is a repeat.  I'm trying to find an effective ash vacuum for my pellet grill.  Am currently using a basic shop vac but I almost set that on fire scooping up some ashes that weren't quite burned out.  Most of the reviews I have read on those available are not very encouraging.  Most indicate that clog easy or cannot contain the fine ash.  Any suggestions?

I use a regular shop vac that hangs on the garage wall. Works well. Funny that you mentioned about the pellets not fully out yet. A few weeks back I was having a small issue with my Traeger and I vacuumed up what I thought were fully extinguished pellets in the pot. After a few minutes tinkering with the smoker, I started to smell something burning but didn't dawn on me that it was the pellets and ashes in the  vacumm. I didn't see any smoke coming out of it. I opened it up and a had a nice chunck of filter that was slowly burning away inside the vac.  :P :P 8)   Yeah, score one for a bonehead move in my part.

Side note: I had the vacuum outside. It was not hanging in the garage.  :)

I use the central vac built into my house.  Hope my wife isn't reading this.  Although, the ash does adhere nicely to the weekly full bucket of hair that our St Bernard sheds.

Someone on this forum or another led me to this one from Home Depot - http://www.homedepot.com/p/Stinger-2-5-Gal-Wet-Dry-Vac-WD2025/100021998#.UdCNqZw4Tbo  I now use it to clean the vehicles and the boat as well as my MAK.  It has a lot of suction, is light, inexpensive, and works very well, but it won't survive lit pellets.  :-)

WM I have an older stinger and it is just the right size to get out for my smoker; but it is not fireproof! You need to suck cold ash with it!  ;D Don

I needed an ash vacuum that I could use at home and take with me in the RV that didn't take up much space.  Found this guy that uses my existing 18v batteries.  Does a great job and has NO dust when being used ... unlike my old cheap Lowe's Shop Vac I was using.

I have a brand new stinger that I only use to vacuum pellets out of the hopper/auger when changing flavors.
