Title: auger feed on academy sports outdoor gourmet pellet grill
Post by: Greg Stoudenmire on August 03, 2012, 07:52:26 PM
I set my Academy Sports Outdoor Gourmet pellet grill / smoker (Traeger Lil Tex clone) with 180 digital control to the smoke setting today and let it warm up.
Came back out and it was 345º - 350º F.
The P setting was 4.
I moved it to 5 and it might have dropped 5º.
I checked the auger feed and it stays on all the time, the only thing that starts and stops is the blower fan.

Is this right? I was under the impression that the auger feed should stop also.

Can anyone help?
Greg

Greg, I have never used a pellet fed grill but someone on here should be able to help you. If this is not right and it is not just a question of setting or something, Academy has the best return policy I know of. If it is not working and you are not happy with it, take it back and talk to a manager and they should make it right.

Well I know that they have good return policy but this was the last one on site.
If it is more then a setting I hope they can order / ship what ever it is to fix it.
It's my first time owning and using a pellet grill so I'm a little lost on what to do.

I would PM muebe - and ask him to comment on your thread...he knows the Treager units very well. Hub is traveling to judge a KCBS competition this weekend...so he is out of pocket....SOmeone else here uses a Treager. I will try to remember who that is....

Greg, they might have the plugs swapped on the fan and the Auger, I don't remember the colors , but look at the plugs for a mismatch in colors. I'll find a diagram if you need it. Fan runs constant and auger goes on and off depending on setting.

Hopefully one of the Traeger guys can come on here and give you some advice. Since it is a Traeger clone that Academy bought, the folks at the custover service line are not going to know a whole lot about it. If somebody can help you pinpoint the part or parts that might be wrong, customer service maybe be able to get it out for you. They can also have one shipped from another store to your store if you need a whole new unit. Been wanrting to pull the trigger on one of these myself but have held off since I know nothing about pellet poopers.

Hopefully that will be it. I looked at the assembly instructions on these and they left a lot to the imagination and the skill of the 3rd party assemblers varies wildly.

Thanks T and Smokein, and TwoPockets.

So fan stays on all the time and feed should start and stop.

Ill check the wiring tomorrow when I have more light to work with.I'd hate to get it apart and not have light to see / work on it.
I'll check the fan and feed connectors.

Greg, the controller connectors are easier to check if you remove the controller. [2 screws]. Make sure unit is unplugged or you will blow the fuse. How do I know that! :D

Greg, if you find you have something seriously defective let me know. I think I have one still in the box I could have transferred to your store.

Greg Smoking Soon hit the nail on the head. The molex connectors for the auger and fan are reversed. Pull the thermostat and swap them. They should be color matched wires so you will probably see the wrong colors plugged into each other.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Even if the colors are matching it would be worth a try to reverse the wires and see if it corrects the problem. The pigtails wiring could have been wrong from the factory.

I'm pretty sure it's just 2 switched connectors. Pretty simple, hot rod, fan, auger. They will all interchange. Someone is probably changing out the Traeger controller for the Ortech somewhere along the line. Greg should be fine after the switch.

THANKS ALL,
I scoped all the pellets out of the hooper, then took all the screws off the hopper and removed it from the feed and the controller came with it.
Set it on a bucket because the wires are short.
The Fan and auger motor wires are black, but on the controller board it was marked fan on one connector, igniter on the middle connector and feed on the other outside connector.
I cut the wire wraps and traced the wires.
They were switched, so I switched them back and put the 18 to 20 screws back in and have fired it back .
No to see if it runs right.

This shows just how great this forum is. Less then 1 hr and its fixed.
Great members on a great forum.

Hope it works Greg! We still have two of these at my store. If I can get the wife's kitchen remodeled before we sell them I might still pick one up without getting a divorce.

Ya really did not have to remove anything but the controller itself, but I'm glad you traced it down. On my Traeger I get a better smoke mode leaving the lid up at least 8-10 minutes after seeing smoke. Played with p settings some, but p2 seems to work well here in norcal. Grill is not in direct sun. I know some folks in this heatwave have had problems with that.
Hoping for a good report!

TP, Just go to your vast cast iron storage and grab 2 pieces you never use and put it on Craigslist. Vintage cast iron goes fast. When I clean out my garage I ask myself " have I needed or wanted this in the past 3 years???" Out it goes for something I can use on a regular basis. [cooking toys/tools]. Works for me.

I have never seen a controller mounted like that before. Does it have studs with nuts on the inside??

I really need to get started back on eBay and get rid of some of this junk. The second time I retired and sat at home for 6 months I was making some serious money selling stuff that had sat around for 10 years or more. I have sold at least 300 pieces of cast iron and probably have around 100 or more left and only use about 10 or so to cook with. I probably have 200-300 straight razors left and that many pocket knives. That doesn't even get into my wife's junk. I kind of look at this as my retirement fund.

Smoke,
I do not remember if it did or not, I did not pay attention to that part.

LTBBQ Tech Support Team!

Great place to give and recieve help without anyone giving any opinions on what your cooking on. Dat's why LTBBQ rules! Other forums would trash the Traeger knockoff. In this economy it will get more folks in the game. LTBBQ = ANYTHING BBQ, and thats whats it's all about, however you do it.

Right on Smokin! We are all about everybody bringin' whatcha' got to the cookout - and usin' it! No one "knows it all" here....We have lots of folks that know their stuff and how to use it - and are gracious in their sharing attitude. Like a backyard party ought to be!. And - I always feel like I can learn something from someone else that will make me better at cookin'.

And....We are not "exclusive" to any brand, or any method. THAT is our strength...in my humble opinion ;D
