Title: Firehouse sub shop - Coming to a city near you (I'd guess)
Post by: Dakota Don on April 01, 2015, 01:33:18 AM
This takes the sub sandwich to a new high, at least as far as sub shops here in the mid states go. A couple of firemen opened up a place called The Firehouse (go figure) and it opened here in Cedar rapids a few weeks ago. They use a lot of smoked brisket and smoked pork shoulder, and it is all smoked right on the property, out back for about 12 hours (this, from the manager....and it's in their brochure/menu, so it must be true). Seriously good eats, in fact, my wife likes their smoked brisket 'firehouse special' better than the brisket I make  :-[  so the challenge flag has been thrown....I need to smoke a whole bunch of briskets for practice, oh well.  :P   By the way, they have a 'special recipe' siracha based sauce served on the side, it's great. I found the prices to be quite reasonable....$5.99 for a 6" or 9 bucks for a twelve (which is a buck or two less than the other sandwich shops around here.)

They have been down here for a while now.  I have been to a few locations, and TBH I have been underwhelmed each time.

Not sure what these things called subs are.  Hoagie is where it is at. Or a grinder, if you want a hot hoagie :P

Firehouse is a growing chain.  They have their moments of brilliance and pretty good quality control.  I've eaten at several and the employees were several notches above the Subway folks who usually just wish you'd go away.  Probably everyone here could make a better sandwich, but not for the price.

I ate a one 5-6 years ago and was not impressed.  Better than Subway, cheaper than Jersey Mike's.

But in my world, first place goes to Steak & Hoagie (http://steaknhoagie.com/).

We have had them for years and they seemed to have been getting better over the years. We also have Jayson's, Jerseys Mikes, Jimmy John's and Publix's I would go to first.

I haven't heard "grinder" since I left North Dakota!

You're a Bison alumnus so you must be referring to Duane Ingeness's (spelling) Taco Shop on University Drive (13th Street).

LOL - I was just thinking that as I re-opened this thread! What a hoot! Yep, as I drive from MPLS to Bismarck I always make a stop for a grinder and gas  ::) in Fargo. Then in Bismarck a stop at the Patterson Hotel (Peacock Alley) for a Moscow Mule.

Of course there are a few other Bismarck traditions - Scotty's for a Tarter Burger (many folks do not know that I invented this delicacy), Big Boy for a Pizza Burger Flying Style with some fries and gravy, and the Woodhouse for a Cheese Frenchy. No trip to ND would be the same without these landmarks!

In my extensive research (1 minute using Google) I found that it is a burger with tartar sauce. You'd never know by the name! :) :P
