Photo of Rec Tec at Fall Gathering.

when you click and enlarge the photo for viewing you may be struck by the way the smoke reinforces the idea of a bull...with those cool handles and all.  8)

i've checked these out.  its a upgraded traeger.  i loved my lil tex.  the rec tec comes w/ the memphis controller (way better).  the thing holds temps to a tee.  nice big inside.  no opinions that i know of.  the 40 lb hopper is very nice also.  40 lbs of pellets.  you could cook forever.  it is a new unit on the market.  haven't heard any bad things about them.  so thats a good thing.  the owner (i don't know his name) is very nice person from what ppl have told me.  if i didn't own the best pellet grill already i would get one.  love the traeger look to it.  towel rack in the front and just love the bull horn handles.  and w/ the great controller.  i'd get one.  and right now they are selling for $995.  no i don't work for no one.  i just checked this smokers out real good.

I'm a Treager user myself and would have chosen the Rec Tec if were available 3 years ago. The size is more than I need, but Ray, the owner explained that the smaller size pits are just too
hard to properly control temps, which in my experiance is true. Tests have indicated that it has some of the most even temps out there. Warranty is the best in the biz also.

I was at the SOTG Gathering and got hands on the Rec Tec.

Couple things i didnt like were the horn handles. Didint like reaching way up and have the blast of heat hit me.
Side where controls are gets hot. IMHO this would cause the circuit board to heat up causing a malfunction.

Liked the hopper. Has a divider and you can use 2 kinds of pellets that will mix into the auger.

Well, had to grab the bull by the horns. The owner ray is shipping 500 lbs of a special pellet mix for free with my purchase. I like the 6 year warranty. I like the fact that with the rear mounted hopper the auger is shorter putting less strain on the motor. They are offering six months same as cash financing. Should arrive sometime in November. The owner Ray says after it is assembled if I am not impressed with the grill, he will have it picked up on Rec-Tecs dime.........what do I got to lose.

The family likes the grub off the PBC, but they are getting tired of charcoal and wanted me to get a gasser...I think this pellet pooper might keep the natives calm......well gotta get on Craigslist.......the PBC is staying put.

Report back!

That is a helluva warranty..

500 pounds of pellets will churn out a ton of tasty food.

I had three of them going at the same time at the Fall Gathering. I own a Yoder - and am very happy with it. But - I have to tell you these are nicely made. And while they follow int the style footsteps of the Treager, they are heavier built. Mostly 8 and 10 gauge I think...
The handles are nice looking, and though they got warm - they never became too hot to handle with bare skin. The controllers got warm, but, not hot to the touch. Of course --we were cooking on these grills in a hardcore manner - I think a couple of them barely got any sleep between cooks, and that may have contributed tot he controller area getting warm....
Pellet consumption was pretty decent too - their consumption rate seemed in line with other units I have played on.

Bang for the but - I think it is a very nice value. Price point compared to the sq. inches of grate, heavy duty construction, the Memphis style controller.....Just a really nice pit - that looks good on anybody's deck or patio.

And - these folks were confident enough in their product - and us - to loan us their competition trailer.

Oh No!
Smoke & I lamented that we were some of the few non automated cookers left ???
I was happy Sparky came back to sanity & now Smoke has gone off the deep end !
Seriously smoke I played with the Rec-Tec & T's yoder,
I smoked & seared on the Yoder , unfortunately I only smoked on Rec-Tec.
The yoder I could live with as my only cooker! It smokes well & for grilling is a FLAMETHROWER!
The Rec-Tec smokes great I can't comment on searing as a grill.
Someone may can comment on grilling on it

Don't you worry my smokey charcoal brother!! My Kingsford aint going anywhere and neither is my PBC!! The pellet pooper is going to be at my parents for their week-day meals. I will use it mostly on the weekends for the food for my gal. She compains about "Repeatin" all night after eating BBQ....if we hadn't been together for 20 years I would send her packin!!  ;D
My folks liked the notion that some people comment that pellet grills don't churn out smokey enough flavored food so this should make them happy while I eat my grub off of charcoal!!

I think your folks will enjoy the ease of use and wonderful moist cooks of a pellet pooper! Also nice to have the use of an outdoor oven with the summer temps you get down there.

Yup!! I will make sure the hopper is full...I figure at 40 lbs it wont need filling too often!! This will be a safe grill to use with no lifting of heavy bags and hardly any clean up!! I will have to wait patiently  ::)  until the weekend for me and Smoochy to get our mits on it!!  :D

It is just my guess John - but I think if you added Grill Grates to the Rec-Tec, you could sear nicely. The contoller goes up to 500F....

Pulled the plug on the Rec-Tec..little too much sticker shock for my parents and me. Going with a Green Mountain Grill from Simi Pellet Grills. We feel better having a dealer just minutes away and he delivers so we will save bucks on pellet deliveries over the long haul.............

my 1st pellet grill was a green mountain.  they have alot of good features to them.  big tall insides to them.  no stainless lid.  power coat doesn't show bbq sauce.   ;)

I think the GMG will be good for my parents if used during the week when I aint there..........just remove a sheet of foil from the drip pan and flip a switch........during the weekend the Kingsford will be lit!!

The Rec-Tec and the GMG are no different - as for use ( foil the pan and go ) smoke... but the GMG is kind of "lightly" built - whereas the Rec-Tec is heavy built. The build quality - without offense to any GMG owners here - is a lot heavier on the Rec-Tec.
And...the Rec-Tec controller is....well you have seen some of muebe's fine cooking ;)....The Rec-Tec uses the same controller that the Memphis grill uses......

BUt - It is nice to have a dealer nearby...Does he stock parts for the GMG?

Yes he does. He would probably swing by to help with any part issues if for some reason I couldn't figure it out!! I feel more comfortable getting the Green Mountain Grill from Eric because he is close-by and his customer service is second to none. For example, he has dropped off his own personal grill to a customers for them to use while he got their grill repaired...how cool is that!!

WOW...looks you have everybody contributing advice on your decision! :D

Either one will make you happy Smoke. And...there is a strong following on the West Coast for the GMG - and they have developed their dealer network heavily out west.

Yeah, this guy is a 20 minute drive away and he has a large stock of pellets which was one of my biggest fears because as you all know...I know where to get Kingsford at!!  8)  but don't have a clue as to where to get the pellets. His site shows GMG, Cookin Pellets and Lumber Jack. Got me some learning to do...........

I know the Cookin' Pellets are good...I know nothing about the Lumberjack brand....One thing I have found tho: Oak - as a base wood - is much better than Alder. On the West Coast - Alder maybe more common ( it is a Pacific NW wood) in pellets that you will see...But, I have used bother Alder wood based pellets and Oak based. Oak based pellets seem to burn better for me. More BTU's and less ash.....

Another good brand to look for is BBQer's Delight. Really like these - and they have a LOT of different flavor/aroma woods.

I would like to try BBQ delight but I have not seen them around here. I can get a 40 pound bag of lumberjack for $15. But if I drove the 3 hours to the plant, they sell them for $13 per 40 pound bag.  Wish I had more place for storage.

Lumberjack 100% Hickory just plain rocks in my Traeger 070! Brought some new life into a pit I thought needed to be upgraded.
Smoke, I hope you made the right choice, for me I would go for the horns!
