As I was cooking a couple steaks last night I remembered the jacks Daniel 's chips conversation early in the week. I did not have the JD chips so I decided to make some using Maple chunks. I split them down some and put them on the grates over the coals.
After they cooled I added them to a jar of white lightning I just happen to have in the fridge...
I decided to place it on a shelf at room temp rather than back in the fridge. The cold may slow the process. This will be a long process so I'll update it from time to time.
I have a jar at the camp with the "real" JD chips in it. Those were put in back around the first of the year so it can provide a. Taste test between the two...

Oh no! Soaking your wood chips!
Turtle is going to be upset :P

I think he's "brining" them for flavor. Okay as long as they're dry when lit.

Probably the best idea I have seen for getting some fiber into a liquid diet..... :D

I hope you know that the white lightning is still OK to drink once you're done. If not give me a call and I will spin over and take care of it for you.

If you wood burns with a clear blue flame, all is good. Be careful lighting them, however. You could lose any and all facial hair.

My luck I would get a throat sliver

Ok, ok I started off wrong. The ....wood to age the shine not for the smoke value.... :-\

coffee filters solve thiss issue quite well..

You can find several suppliers of barrel wood on line just for this purpose. A couple pieces in a quart jar will provide a decent aged flavor to raw whiskey quickly
Southern Barrels out of Texas makes one and five gallon barrels as well. A one gallon barrel will age any sprit the same in one year as five years in a 50 gallon Barrel.

I need to drive down and get some of that 'shine. Is it your home made stuff?

A friend made it...
We sold our still a while back. Some guy wanted it way worse than we did and since my brew buddy moved to T-Town its hard to get together enough.
I have one more of the old stainless steel milk buckets , so one day maybe I'll set up another one.
