Title: Building a fire pit in the back yard
Post by: pz on October 18, 2013, 12:29:33 PM
My son helped me with this one - we had concrete wall blocks left from a retaining wall demolition, and thought that recycling them into something useful would be a good thing to do.  Just found these pics of the construction (from a couple years ago)

Gotta be an old picture...    Only a hatchet within reach.   :D

Nice job repurposing the blocks.  Looks better than the combine rims people use around here!

lol, CIALIS and weapons don't belong in the same commercial!

We enjoyed re-purposing the materials - everything in the construction was cast off from other projects.  One of these days I'd like to finish the project with some kind of metal internal structure I could use for cooking purposes - would be kind of cool to cook in a fire pit

Heck, if I built a fire pit on my ranch in New Mexico, I would probably burn half the State down.  :)

Nice looking pit. Must be nice on a cool evening.

Cool!! Two pieces of angle iron across the top a foot apart will make a nice landing for a cast iron Dutch oven.

Good idea- you could also put a piece of expanded metal over the angle iron to act as a grill, or a add a griddle - just move some of the embers under the "grill" and use the fire to feed it.

Excellent ideas, gents!  That's kind of what I had in mind, only to have a couple of the wall blocks inside the pit and space them wide enough to fit the interlocking Grill Grates - then from the main fire, shovel coals beneath the grates.  However, I like the idea of a couple of pieces of angle iron on top with even more Grill Grates for a more large scale production.  I'd also like to have a paella pan and Korean BBQ as accessories.  Granted, it would be a special use pit because it would be best when the weather turns cool, but before winter settles in.

That's a great place for one of those tripod things that can hang a grill or a Dutch Oven. Fun stuff!

... although we do have a couple of female divorced friends... oops, did I say that?  :o

That's a great idea!  I've always loved the idea of a witch's cauldron to cook a hearty stew that can be spooned into bowls by the fireside.

That's what I was thinking too but at my old age I would need a gate to get in and tend to the stuff!

Love the pit PZ especially the last pic! Don
