A Fun Evening with the Raclette Grill
« Reply #-1 on: December 31, 2016, 11:12:16 PM »
It has been a long tradition for Mrs H and myself to go to our little get-away destination for a few days to celebrate New Years Eve. Sometimes with another couple or two, or family. The get-away town is New Glarus,  WI. It's America's own little Switzerland,  as the people, architecture, food, and drink are steeped in Swiss tradition. We always have a great time there, but because of the new grandbabies arrival, New Years in New Glarus wasn't possible this year. So we brought a bit of the Swiss tradition to our home for a fun and casual night around the raclette grill. It's a party meal much like the other Swiss dining treat, fondue. With raclette there is a grill top, under that a heating element, and under the element you place trays of cheese to be melted. The options are endless! This evening we had Swiss gruyere cheese, Danish fontina cheese, sliced boiled red potatoes, salami, small lobster tails,  sliced baguette bread, mustard, onion, gherkins and beets. This is accompanied by much wine! ;)
It's fun, you eat what you want, at whatever pace you want. It's a great entertaining concept because you talk as you cook your own food. It was nice this evening because life has been hectic and tonight was anything but.
Our family wishes everyone a very fun and safe New Years Eve and a New Year filled with Hope!
Peace

Wow I wish I was there......I just found my old Raclette  cooker in the basement........needs a little cleaning ??? I had many a night 25 years ago with that cooker.

I am 1/2 Swiss part German & part Irish but 100% American LOL

I believe the traditional Raclette is a hunk of cheese put into the fire place or fire pit with the fire on one side. As the front facing the fire melts you pull it out & with a knife scrape off the melted/soft cheese on some ones plate. Then it goes back into the fire for the next serving.

I have had it once this way & it was outstanding but since I am only half Swiss.....I like the cooker way better.

I got to clean my unit up & see if it still works

It also helps to keeps the wine flowing :P :P :P

Man wish I was there it has been to many years.

Pam you would love it since it's like bringing the campfire cooking inside for the Winter!
A few pics so people see what this wonderful way of cooking/entertaining is.
1st pic, raclette grill with grilltop off.
2nd pic, individual cheese melting pan
3rd pic,  four of the eight pans in place under burner
4th pic, grill-side of reversible cast iron grid
5th pic, crepe-side
The unit I have is SwissMar Eiger. We love it and always say we should use it more!

That is nicer then my unit that must be about 25+ years old. My unit has a red round top that you put the cooked potatoes on to keep warm. I have almost triangle shaped pans for the cheese to be cooked with the goodies on top. The burners look about the same. Thanks for the pictures & info.

Gene, everything looks great, and I like that whole concept as a party idea.  We do something similar for new year's Eve, putting out a bunch of finger foods.  But the idea of grilling food as you want it takes it to the next level.

I will be remembering this!
