Saturday Night Fondue
« Reply #-1 on: November 09, 2013, 09:09:13 PM »
It's a long weekend and usually we get away for a few days and head up to New Glarus,WI. It's a little town predominately of Swiss people, and as a result the architecture and food are Swiss as well. It's a great get-away spot, as they make some of the world's best beer there,(New Glarus) and the food (Swiss/German) is to die for. This town is reminiscent of Switzerland, (minus the Swiss Alps) as there are rolling green pastures, and dairy cows everywhere. This is America's dairy land as more cheese is made in Green county than anywhere in North America.
My dearest felt homesick for New Glarus so she wanted Swiss cheese fondue for dinner tonight. I was happy to oblige. I made a loaf of rye bread in the breadmaker, had a glass of spatlese, and we were off cooking the fondue. It was very good, wish you could have joined us!

Now it is about 6 hours - back when I lived in Racine it was about 2 1/2 hours, a bit faster if I ran the Austin Healy... But, it is still worth the trip. It is fun to go back and visit friends, I'll have to schedule a stop at the House on the Rock and some places like New Glarus. I was just talking with T2 at lunch today about the small towns in Wisconsin and some of the unique sights (like House on the Rock.) It is a great state. T and his lovely wife shared stories about some of the cheeses they found on their trip.

I've never lived in WI, but there are a ton of fun little towns to visit/travel thru. Lots of ethnic towns. Lots of beer, cheese, and sausages. Great people as well!

Couldn't agree more. Maybe we can meet up there this summer...

The fondue looks really good!  We've been thinking of doing fondue for a couple of weeks now - even purchased the cheeses at Costco.

My plan is to use Gruyere, sharp white cheddar, beer, Worchestershire, mustard, and garlic.  All I need do is convince my sweetie to bake a loaf of bread  :P

If you're going to be that way - I'll pull the Austin out of storage and do it in 4:50...  ;)
