My Dad wanted me to get him one of these last summer, but I had their patio full of my pits and didn't do it. The night he passed away I thought about not getting it for him and I told Wendy I am going to get him one now....kinda like a tribute to Pops..........

Cool grill Smoke!
Great tribute to your dad!
-
That is awesome! Is that similar to one Captain Jack has? Or am I mixing up a member....some cool old aluminum grill.
-
Captain Jack has a Char-Broil Aluminum grill. Betcha those are as hard to find as hens teeth....
-
Why don't you give us a complete review on this, as the ratings on Amazon are off the hook! I'm sure Pop's is watching.

Those are a true American classic grill.
I agree with the others; a great tribute to your Pops!

I thought of giving it a review, but it is such a simple pit.Just two vents underneath and on top and a hinged lid and that is that. It has even less bells and whistles than a Weber kettle, but I will give you lots of posts in this thread as I get adventurous with it ;) It hasn't been around since 1952 for nothing.
It started being made in Tyler Texas. It disappeared in the 1970's. A fella in Little Rock,Arkansas picked one up that was made in the 50's at a yard sale and he set out to bring it back.
Char-Broil actually owned the rights to the Portable Kitchen (thank Goodness they didn't Mfg it and cheapen it up and have it made in China), he was able to get the rights and they now actually use the original molds to make these throwbacks to yesterday...today :)

I got one of these bad boys last summer. I love it and use it more often than my Weber Performer

Great little grill.

Nice Looking grill Smoke and a great tribute to Pop's !!!! Don
-
Great grill smoke. How do you clean the ash out of them?
-
That is a true Classic Smoke. I am sure you will have good memories of your Pop every time you cook on it.
Jack, if you lived closer I would take that CharBroil off your hands.
-
Cool looking grill Smoke! And I agree about every time you cook using that grill memories will abound! It'll be like sharing a cold one with your pop while the meat cooks! Nice touch buddy! 8)
-
Great grill smoke. How do you clean the ash out of them?
Cleaning is a snap: you can either open up the two bottom vents and brush out the ash.........but the best way is to take off the lid. It is hinged to lock in place but when the top is in the closed position it just lifts right up. The bottom pc just rests in the stand. Pick it up and dump it in the trash and you are ready for the next cook.
-
Captain Jack, please rethink the Char-Broil aluminum grill. Those bad boys are darn near non-existent. You will probably never find another one. Just think this one over a bit.
If you still decide to part with it, pm me and we will work out shipping to the San Bernardino mountains 8) 8)

Go for it Sparky. I got the PK. You will love this retro grill next to your Weber collection.
-
I know you just got it but how do you like cooking on it compared to you 26 weber kettle?

I know you just got it but how do you like cooking on it compared to you 26 weber kettle?
Well, only one cook so far, did -4- Rib-Eyes and just like the Weber, you grill with the lid down. The Mfg claims with all 4 vents completely wide open that you still do not get enough air in the PK to support a flame. That turned out to be true because I did not trim the fat off of the steaks and had no flare-ups at all. The aluminum grill really gets hot. The grill seals up air tight and I have a bunch of coals left over for tonights cook......so far so good.....
-
Performer or pk grill? Which would you get smoke. Walking into California backyard now.
-
Tough one my 49 er loving Cali buddy. I think the PK will actually outlast the Performer. The Performer is a bit larger. Both? If you already have a Performer, if you can grab an PK (you never see them for sale on CL or Ebay) go for it.
-
Old school it is. Ordering a pk when I get home.

VERY NICE GRILL

Good move Sparky 8) 8)
Go for the Fall Grilling bundle...it is a good deal
http://www.pkgrills.com/the-fall-grilling-bundle/
-
The PK is so airtight, the coals go out real fast. Here I am using the coals from yesterdays cook for some English Bangers
(http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc469/s1cott11/1129141635_zps9618cda1.jpg) (http://s1213.photobucket.com/user/s1cott11/media/1129141635_zps9618cda1.jpg.html)
They say in the owners manual if you 1/2 close all dampers your internal temp will drop around 50 degrees for some slower grilling.....so I did
(http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc469/s1cott11/1129141701_zpsa5751fe6.jpg) (http://s1213.photobucket.com/user/s1cott11/media/1129141701_zpsa5751fe6.jpg.html)
Added the littlemore cooking grate (which is included in the Fall Grilling Bundle, Sparky ;) ) and got the buns warmed while the bangers finished up
(http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc469/s1cott11/1129141702_zps12112aa2.jpg) (http://s1213.photobucket.com/user/s1cott11/media/1129141702_zps12112aa2.jpg.html)
This is a very fun grill to use. You can kick it Old School and cook grub like another generation did, so many years ago.......to be continued.....
-
Great grill and good looking grub on it. ;)
-
I was at estate sale a few years back and saw one of the old 1950's model PK's for sale for $20. It needed new cooking and charcoal grates but was in perfect shape otherwise. I did not know they were making them again and I could have bought replacement grates. I wish I had bought it.
-
Smoke, I was planning on getting a Webber kettle this Spring but after seeing your new PK grill, this may have changed my plans altogether! 8)

Please keep an eye on my PK adventures in this ongoing thread. Maybe you can grab a kettle and a PK next spring.

Here is another Char- Broil that was found in a dumpster by a fellow on another forum.

Picture of the inside with the cast iron grates which I have never seen before in this grill.

Dave, that's the same model as my original aluminum Char-Broil grill I had in the 70s
it's the late 70s~80s model that had the slide out ash drawer on the bottom, to make it easier to clean up after a grill
but the ash drawer killed it as a good indirect cooker. too much air leakage all around the drawer
mine also had the cast iron grates
it was a SERIOUS grilling machine, but that's all it was good for
the earlier model I have now with the solid bottom and just the 4 vents is THE aluminum cooking machine
and like my OldSmokey, it's so light, I just pick it up and dump the ashes out of it after a cook
btw- I still have the grate lifting tool that came with that grill ;)
