Title: Scored big time on some stick burner fuel
Post by: smokeasaurus on January 25, 2015, 09:00:22 PM
The thing about the mountains is that most houses don't come with A/C (don't need it) and they all come with fireplaces. There is no shortage of wood cutters round here. If you go to downtown by the lake, you will see pick up trucks stacked with wood with a phone number and price on a big wood sign. Driving home from downtown we pass at least 3 wood cutters houses.

I got lucky with a guy two doors down from me that cuts wood. He goes off deep in the forest and cuts up felled pine, cedar and oak. The Forestry Dept. will go into the forest and mark trees and they are free for anyone to cut down without a permit.

I got my second load of fire-wood today (mix of pine and oak) and was able to get him to cut me some mini-splits. No Bark. Dry as the Sahara. Fist size diameter and 10-12 inches long. The wood is Live Oak. It is very similar to scrub oak. You can use both for smoking.

He has a bundler and says if anyone in So-Cal on this forum wants some he will work out a sweet price..ya just got to come to the mountains to get it, but if you do, Old Smoke will help you load up.

Here is the big time score.......all this for 30.00 bucks (neighborly discount 8) )

Nice! Fireplace wood around here is a premium. And the dryness can be suspect

Cory lets me have a 1/2 cord for 150.00 and he brings two guys to help me stack it up. It is a mix of pine and oak...pine to get a good fast coal base and oak for the long hot burn. It smells like a BBQ all around here with everyone burning oak all day and night.

Does this mean a stick burner is in your future?

smoke, that's a great deal on those splits. It's nice to have great neighbors.

Yes Sir, for those days I can actually tend a fire and set around. We heard about a guy in Long Beach that makes barrel smokers and grills. Should be going down to get it in about 3 weeks.

Will do a mini product review and this will be the pit for the Tendarub challenge Part 2  ;)

That may really extend the break-in period for the stick burner.

1/4 in steel would survive, this pit unfortunately will not be that thick, I am thinking of having the San Bernardino fire dept. on speed dial  :D :D
