Title: Must Try Foods From Each State
Post by: ACW3 on April 07, 2015, 05:08:40 AM
I saw this on MSN this morning.  There are a few recipes that I will add to my collection.  What do you think?

I kept count and I've eaten all but about six or seven of these (some of the definitions aren't clear).  Most interesting, though, is the attribution by state.  Sorry, but Kentucky is not the home of CFS by a long shot and there are some state specialties totally omitted.  I think the author got too much information off the internet and not enough by going to each state and looking for its "state food" and actually eating it.  If anyone wants to finance it, I'll volunteer to write a better article  ::)   -- I think I could do it in about a year.

I hope our members will post corrections as they see fit.  I'll chime in that Oklahoma is not famous for that chicken casserole thing and that I'm slightly offended by that.

Come on, folks -- what is the REAL thing?

I would say New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania were spot on.  Hard to find a good hoagie (sub, grinder, hero, etc) outside of the state.  Roast pork and broccoli rabe with sharp provolone is my favorite.

All about the roll, the bread just isn't the same elsewhere.

The Kalua Pork and fried rice from Hawaii sounds real good.

Wild blueberries for Minnesota? You could ask a thousand natives and not one of them would say wild blueberries.
I'd say hotdish or wild rice, or walleye.

I don't know where they got the chicken casserole idea.  If BBQ isn't up there then they were thinking of the wrong state.

I found this on Oklahoma
Oklahoma designated an official state meal In 1988 consisting of fried okra, squash, cornbread, barbecue pork, biscuits, sausage and gravy, grits, corn, strawberries, chicken fried steak, pecan pie, and black-eyed peas.

I had a link here for the site but does not give food for other states.

With a meal like that no wonder a lot of Okies are overweight.

At least they hit New Mexico!   Anything with red OR green chili works.    The official state question here is:  Red or Green?   If you want a combo of both, order "Christmas."

X2! My first thought was walleye followed by wild rice... then "a dish to pass"...  :D ;) Finally lutefisk - but I don't eat that - I just say no! Wild blueberries would never have occurred to me, even tho' we have the blueberry festival at Lake of the Woods every summer. And I did win with a blueberry chili (sorry Ka Honu) one year... Still never would have "picked" them for this list.

Agreed. Making green chile chicken enchiladas for dinner tonight...

That's a much better list, Don.  About the only thing on it that doesn't fit is grits.  Oklahoma is a southwestern state and grits were pretty rare there when I was growing up.  Pecan Pie would be a great choice!  But it is "puh-cahn" pie.  Pee-cans, as Emeril says, are for truckers.  Isn't regionalism wonderful  ::)

What is funny is that most folk in Alabama do not use white BBQ sauce and a lot don't even know it exists.

The Cincinnati chili they had for Ohio is mostly around the Cincy area. Any one dish would be hard to pin down, Ohio is pretty scattered by ethnic groups. Cleveland has a lot of Polish and Eastern Europe people, sauerkraut balls, pierogies and kraut and pork dishes. Columbus is home of a lot of fast food places. There are Amish and then just mid-west favorite food. Fried mush for breakfast and corn pudding or casseroles for dinner. Along Lake Erie shores it would be walleye and perch. Candy called buckeyes are popular, made from peanut butter balls dipped about 3/4 of the depth in chocolate, made to look like the nut from a buckeye tree. Buckeyes is our nickname. Smokin Don

Well that list jumps all over the place. Some are actual plates of food, some are generic types of food, and some are just a fruit or vegetable.

The list should just stick with one type of thing from each state.

As far as California we really do love our Avocados!
