I love root beer!  I believe out of all those brands, I'd have picked A & W too.  Not that I've tasted all of the ones rated, mind you; I just think it's a great root beer.

We still have some A & W root beer stands in our area.

The best root beer of all time IMHO is  Frostie root beer.   And boy does it bring back some good memories.

I guess it isn't common enough anymore.  We see it on a limited basis a couple times per year, and when I do I buy it up.

These days A&W for nostalgiic rootbeer floats, but Sprecher is my favorite made by Sprecher brewery in Milwaukee.
My favorite of all time most definitely is Dog n Suds. They were similar to A&W rootbeer stands but the rootbeer was better I thought. Had one 2 blocks from where I grew up.

I remember going to the A & W drive in with my 1965 Corvette convertible, when they still had curb service.  I forgot the actual name, but they made a root beer shake by mixing the ice cream like a milk shake.  They were large and really hit the spot on a hot day.

A&W rite of passage - swipe a mug....  ;D

When I was in college in ND (many, many years ago) my mom came for a visit and we went to A&W. By then it was only inside seating. We talked about growing up, the differences in our generations. I also told her about the swiping of the mug.

On the way back to her hotel, she opened her purse and showed me the mug she swiped...  ??? ??? ::) ;D

We had a Dog-n-Suds drive-in  right down the road from where I live (it's an East of Chicago pizza shop now).   I agree the root beer WAS better.

Man, talk about good memories of growing up. We'd go to Dog & Suds and I'd get a footlong, fries and a "Frostie" root beer in a frosted mug.  Loved it!

Cliff, I agree about the good memories!  In fact their mascot, don't remember his name ( but he had a strong resemblance of Goofy from Disney) , anyway in the Summer every Saturday Goofy would walk around the neighborhood (which had an unbelievable amount of kids) and he'd hand out certificates for free root beer. Talk about being the most popular dog in the neighborhood!  :D
