Back when I was in my twenties, I partied a lot in Chicago. And most nights' drinking sessions seemed to end at Jim's Original Polish Sausage Stand, regardless of where in the city we were partying! The polish were to die-for, but the pork chop sandwiches were even better. Jim's was at the corner of Maxwell and Halstead Streets. It was once referred to as Jew Town because of the Jewish immigrants that operated storefronts there thru the 50's. In the 60's and to the end in 1994, some of the best blues music in Chicago was played on Saturdays and Sundays in an abandoned lot. Another oddity of Jim's, it was open 24 x 7, 365 days a year! Check it out.... www.jimsoriginal.com
So yesterday I was jonesing for a Jim's chop sandwich. Oh the smells of that place! After work i got the one-burner out and put the griddle atop preheating.
On went sliced onions, fries (once called Jewtown fries) and the chops! A couple neighbors came by to "investigate the smells" and they were rewarded! Plated with a grilled bun, chop, mustard, and a pile of onions, along with fries and a side-salad. The memory train kept rollin'! 8) The good ol' days to be sure.
