Title: The Versatile Mason Jar
Post by: Smokin Don on May 31, 2013, 01:10:29 PM
The Mason jar was invented and patented in 1858 by Philadelphia tinsmith John Landis Mason.  Among other common names for them are Ball jars, after Ball Corporation, an early and prolific manufacturer of the jars; fruit jars for a common content; and simply glass canning jars reflecting their material.

The Mason jar is one of the most versatile items invented; at least to me. Their uses are unlimited; we use them daily, wide mouth pint jars are our everyday water glasses. I have canned some over the years and pickled food. I use them a lot for food storage; some other uses that comes to mind are, flower vase, to water flowers, a pencil holder, to clean paint brushes and to store parts in. My favorite use would be as a beer glass! The pint is perfect for a beer.

Our home is decorated early American. A lot of our furniture and decorations were bought at auctions over the years. I have  a quart and a pint Mason jar with the original patent date of 1858. The quart jar has an original zinc lid. My favorite color is the dark aqua, blue green.

Our vegetarian daughter in law uses them to store her grains and pasta in.

When I saw the commemorative set of six small mouth pint jars at Amazon I knew had to have a set. I checked at Walmart but they didn’t have them so I ordered them from Amazon. Also shown were lids with a battery and solar collector to use the jars as a night light. They come in brown or silver so I ordered three brown , two for me and one for our daughter in law.

The night light lid is a perfect way to show the jar. They come with a plastic insulator on the battery so you have to remove it for them to work!

Original quart and pint jars with the patent date are on the right, on the left are two of the new ones.

They are cool

When i metal detect and come across a mason jar lid, i dig from the side to the jar cuz you never know what could be in them. To dat i have dug 6 jars with the old white milkglass inserts under the lids.

The really "kultured" among us call it "classic Southern stemware."  Other, more contemporary designs made of modern materials are available as part of a "sofisticated" entertainment set as shown below.

Turtle,    I really like that red stemware  because many times when I give them for wedding gifts they match the stripe colors on the newlywed's double wide.  I wrote and explained that to the company making them and they said they would look in to making other colors...I was surprised that I was the first one with this suggestion.  Dee

When you need a relaxing evening at home take a pint Mason jar fill it with ice up to the neck then fill it up with some Tito's Handmande Vodka (from Austin, TX) and let it sit for a minute or two till the ice and vodka mix into that sublime cold mixture. SIP that down and if you are not relaxed and chilled out, you have a worse drinking problem than I do.

You can use any kind of glass you wish, but a Mason jar seems to do the trick much better.

You have never had good sweet tea, apparently. It's the official drink of the South!

My Grandfather used to take old Mason jars & mayo jars and bolt/nail the lids to the underside of a shelf above his workbench. Then, he would fill the jars with small screws, nails, drill bits, etc. so he could easily see them and be able to identify what was in each one. Multiple uses for those old jars.

Atlas is another old brand name for glass canning jars.  I have some other oddly named ones too, but can't recall what they are right now.

I use mine for a wide variety of storage, too.  Most of mine are vintage, ranging in size from 1/4 cup to half gallon.

I made these foamy soap dispensers out of a couple vintage blue glass jars.  The blue dish soap looks best but I didn't have any right then.  The quart dispenser is in the kitchen and the pint in the bathroom

Thanks, SmokinKat!  The deer hang around all winter because we feed them.  Who can resist those big brown eyes?

Uff Dah was commonly heard where I grew up, in southwest Minnesota.  I think it's a Belgian thing.  Up here in the arrowhead, people say 'eh' like in some parts of Canada, or 'hey' used the same way, at the end of a sentence.  The accent here is like northern Ontario, not Fargo.

Spuds, good luck with the liquid laundry soap.  I tried it and once the residue from the store detergent washed out, our clothes were so gray and stinky we'd have been ashamed to wear them.  It works for some people though, I guess, because enough people rave about it.

I used the pump from foamy dispensers that came with store bought foamy soap to make the jars.  I cut the threads off of the original plastic soap bottles so the pump part had something to screw itself to and hold the lid and pump together, and then used a utility knife to cut a hole sized to fit the pump.  The lids were a couple that I purchased that are made for Mason jars.  Don't drill holes in them because they'll just break.  Once I had the lids and pumps assembled, I determined how long the little hoses needed to be to reach the bottom of the jars, then just slipped it over the original tube.  I used some scraps of aquarium tubing to lengthen those by cutting them to length and then trimming the bottom of the tubing at an angle so the soap can easily get in there.  That's it.  To mix up your own foamy soap, pour in about 1/3 to 1/4 of the bottle (one pint jar will take about 2/3 to 1/2 cup of dish soap, for example).  The amount depends how thick the soap is.  A name brand that's thick will take less than the cheap stuff from the dollar store.  You may have to experiment a little to get the right amounts.  Put the cover on and shake over the sink, because the lids WILL leak.  I guess you could stir the mixture before putting the lid on, too.  I'll have to try that myself.  Making these are pretty easy, even though it might not seem like it.  If you don't want foamy soap, then just use a dispenser from a regular soap jar.  I get mine at dollar stores buying those dollar bottles of hand soap, which is a lot cheaper than buying dispensers separately.  The cut-off threads don't show once it's all put together anyway.

After much scientific research, in my opinion Tito's is the best and smoothest Vodka on the market and much cheaper than the high priced yuppie vodkas. My wife likes it with cranberry juice with a splash of orange juice. I like it straight over rocks.

x3, Tito's is good stuff.  And the freezer is the only place it should be stored

For those not familiar with alcohol in the freezer, if the alcohol content is high enough it will not freeze.  It just gets super cold!   Wine and beer will freeze and break the container, but "hard" liquor will not.  I'm not certain what percentage or proof you need not to freeze, but vodka lives in my freezer just fine. On the other hand, tried a bottle of peach schnapps one time and it froze solid.

Back more on subject of the mason jars, I like those soap dispenser mods.  May have to make a go at this one.

I bought some tequila down in Mexico one time and when I put it in the freezer it did freeze. So I showed my old neighbor and he decided to take a swig off the bottle(there was some liquid in it). The look on his face was classic because he pretty much drank 200 proof tequila since the alcohol that was in the liquid did not freeze. :o

Picket fence and Mason jar solar lights:

I know you guys would rather fill a Mason jar with vodka but out daughter in law filled hers with solar lights!

Jul 29 2014

The past two weeks I had been helping our son build a picket fence; mainly so their dog could have a place to run. The cooler weather we have been having was kind to us. I had set poles while in the USAF and set several on my property but had never built a fence.

We used 4X4 treated lumber for the posts and quick-krete to set them. We had to keep the posts accurate to put up the pre-made 4X8 red cedar picket sections. It connects to the house on one end and the garage on the other. The one corner we had to use two sections on an angle to miss some large roots from an old oak tree. We installed one 4 foot gate. All was put together with deck screws.

For two amateurs it turned out looking nice. There was about a 6 inch rise in the yard and we kept all the pickets looking pretty level by gradually raising the posts and height.

Our son’s wife is pretty handy and artistic. She made some hanging solar lanterns from pint Mason jars. She got the idea from the blue jar, with solar lid I had given her but pricing the solar lids they were $5 each. I think she did a dozen of them.

She bought little stick in the ground solar lights at Lowes for .97 cents each. She tore them apart, cut square holes in the Mason lids and glued them in. She drilled holes in the lids and put a section of chain on to hang them up. She has them all hanging on the fence posts and they look nice. She said she just had $31 in the lights.

A fire pit yes. I like the big pot they have, looks newer than an old cast iron pot. The bottom is welded on and it has slotted hole for air. I think she is going to make a ring with brick and then fill with pea gravel. Don
