Today was a great day for our 8 yr. old grandson and Grampa too! Last Monday I bought him a small rod and reel. It was an open face reel and a short rod for dock fishing, perfect for him. I had him practice with it in the back yard and after several casts he had it down pat. We went down to the river and fished for a while, had several nibbles but no fish.
Today I took him to Bressler Reservoir in Lima, OH. I made a few casts and had a crappie just big enough to keep. I made a few more casts and was getting hits close to shore when I reeled in so I let him fish. I knew he would probably just get small ones but wanted him to see how to catch one. He caught 5 all together; 1 small crappie and the other 4 were small bass.
He had a lot of fun and didn’t want to leave but he lost his balance on the rock he was standing on and got his foot wet. I told him we’ll go home and I’ll show you how to clean a fish and then I’ll cook it for your lunch. So we left with our one small catch of the day! I was happy that now he knew how to catch a fish.
When we got home he had to get Grandma to see the fish. She took a picture of us and then I showed him how to clean and filet a fish. When he got hungry I dusted the fish with half flour and half cornmeal and pan fried the fish in a little olive oil, seasoned with a little Old Bay. For a side I sautéed some rice; added a little chicken broth and seasoning. He liked all five bites of our catch of the day!
He stayed here until his Dad came to get him at 4:30 for a little league baseball game at 5:30. Grandma and I went to see his game. His team won, I think their 6th straight. His Mom got therefrom work in time to see his home run, I think with two on. Needless to say we were all pretty proud of the little guy!!
Gavin with our BIG catch!

Don..I bet you guys had fun..someone said they were catching croppies at Schoonovers in Lima. Bresslers is about 3 minutes from my house, I live in Shawnee. They are also catching lots of croppies at Sandy Point lake where I camp. Kids caught a 5 gallon bucket of croppies the other weekend. good luck. Pam ; *))

Life can get no better than time fishing with kids except time showing them how to clean and cook them. Some of my most precious memories are the times I spent fishing with my kids.
-
You have created a memory for Gavin that he will have for the rest of his life.
I can tell you that some of my best memories of time I spent fishing with my Dad, and my Grandfather, then cleaning and cooking our catch.

What a great day, Don. There is something magic about that first fish and it's great that you were there to help make the magic. Great pictures and Gavin has a super smile! Then to top it off with a home run... what a perfect day - for BOTH of you.
