Title: is it possible to cook a frozen chuckie at lunch and have it ready for dinner?
Post by: sparky on June 21, 2013, 12:49:57 AM
H#ll yes!  well, if you have a WSM and are hungry.

it all starts w/ a frozen chuckie and some friends.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower004.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower004.jpg.html)

its really frozen solid.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower005.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower005.jpg.html)

a little twist.  I added the chuckie into a baggie w/ some A & W rootbeer (i'm up at the cabin and don't have any glue material up here) and some burnt sacrifice Kansas city rub.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower007.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower007.jpg.html)

let it sit like that for 1 hour.  the rootbeer froze to the chuckie.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower016.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower016.jpg.html)

added some more rub to the chuckie.  a lot more.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower017.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower017.jpg.html)

going old school today.

fired up the 22 WSM (practicing for when the power goes out in the winter, lol) w/ my can in the middle.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower011.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower011.jpg.html)

hot charcoal in can.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower012.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower012.jpg.html)

pull can out.  waa laa......

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower013.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower013.jpg.html)

all vents wide open.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower015.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower015.jpg.html)

everyone in the pool!  temps at 250° and climbing.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower019.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower019.jpg.html)

1 pecan & 3 cherry.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower020.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower020.jpg.html)

were cooking w/ heat boys and girls.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower021.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower021.jpg.html)

chuckie reached 160°.  time for some veges (shrooms and onions) and a FT.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower036.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower036.jpg.html)

looks good.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower037.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower037.jpg.html)

cya at around 200 buddy.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower041.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower041.jpg.html)

wow, the old hippie has skills around the WSM.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower054.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower054.jpg.html)

added some more rub to it.  oh ya.  super yummy.

started at 1 pm and finished up before 7.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower056.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower056.jpg.html)

I normally put my chuckie on rice or big fat noodles.  don't have any.  so a 1/2 a hamburger bun w/ do.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower060.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower060.jpg.html)

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower061.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower061.jpg.html)

while I was cooking look what came down out of the mountains and checked out the smoker.  not more than 20 feet away from me.

(http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb366/sparky5353/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower023.jpg) (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/sparky5353/media/cabin%20bbq%20pics/chuckiepower023.jpg.html)

right on the other side of my truck.  I guess they know when you are a fisherman and not a hunter.

Looks great.  Hopefully that was a good size chuck and you didn't burn up a bag for a little one all by itself on the WSM.  ;)

Wow - very nice. An old school cook at the "cabin" and watching the deer wander by... how much better could it get?

just a little 5 lber.  ya, it did take a lot of charcoal but I was going for high heat and for over 5 hours time.  the damn chuckie was frozen solid.  I most use my WSM for shorter cooks like ribs, abt's, chicken.  I am told that in the winter time this area loses power for days at a time.  who needs power of you got a WSM.   ;)

well......  if the cabin was on the lake that might make it a little better but I agree w/ you.  old school cooking and watching the deer.  it was a great afternoon.   :)

Funny I am exactly the opposite with how I use my Weber.  I tend to use my WSM 22 for really long stuff and my offset for up to about 8 hours.  Did it actually burn down all the charcoal during the chuckie cook?  If not, there'd have been road kill or something in there just to make me feel like I hadn't wasted available heat. :-)

Looks great Sparky! Appears that frozen to finished in a WSM is no problem.

Are we having venison steaks tomorrow?  ;)
