Title: What would we do without the internet
Post by: RickB on July 08, 2013, 06:56:28 PM
My internet was down for 4 days and then spotty for two more. Looks like I am back to normal. What a bummer not to have access after 10 years of no problems at all. I thought I was going to go crazy! We just don't realize how much we depend on the internet. And hell I am an old fart! :D

Tell me about it, I go ape Sh/t when it messes up for just s few hours. NO LTBBQ :o. But I do have my phone data plan which I can always go to. Just don't like using up my data when I'm paying for home Internet ;)
And no Facebook and Instagram for the wife.

I spend as much "leisure time" on line as anyone (several hours a day) but when we go out of town I usually only check my email for "important stuff" once or twice a week.  I guess I haven't crossed the line between "hooked" and "obsessed" yet.

I would have to ask my neighbor to tap into his wireless. Either that or the coffee shop

Last winter we were without power for four days during a snowstorm... no internet, no landline, and no cell phones after a few days (lesson: buy mobile charger). I felt totally out of touch with the world!

A few months ago our household was part of the well-publicized AT&T U-Verse outage.  We had no phone, no TV and no Internet.  I was forced to read books and talk to my wife.

I will tether in an emergency or (God forbid) spend some extra time at work catching up on "personal" stuff.

We would spend more time with our families.

We would get to know our neighbors.

We would spend more time in our communities.

We would spend more time outdoors.

We would survive like we did for thousands of years and probably we better off without it.

Sorry, I know it is a wonderful tool and a great way to communicate but it's abused like everything else in this world. I think we have lost just as much in our society as we have gained from it's creation.

Was this the answer you were looking for?   ;D

Some very good insight in that post!

I've always thought it interesting that the "internet" or "texting" are about communication, but can create isolation as these tools are used to replace face to face communication. Maybe not right now, but looking at trends and tendencies among teenagers... it is a sobering thought. I laugh (sort of) when my daughter responds to my questions (face to face) with IDK (I Don't Know in "text" speak.)

I do use the net for my business - I am a consultant - emails and the ability to send a variety of materials "instantly" is a valuable tool. However, without regular voice contact and occasional face to face meetings, my business would not work.

ok I work for one of those big telecom companies.  When my cable internet goes down I'm furious (I work from home) but I'm still connected via wireless network ... with 4G LTE it's just as fast as cable.

As far as face time (pun intented) my mom lives in Kauai half the year, so my kids facetime her at least once a week while she is on the island.  It's a perfect way for them to interact.

I get it, we're all a little too connected to screen time, but it is an efficient communication mechanism.  And I wouldn't be half the BBQ cook I am without the Internet.

Yes we are all too connected. But I write for a couple of magazines and a few blogs... in the old days you sent out hard copy today you can instantly send them via the web... for me it's much easier.

As for social interaction, it is what you make it. I limit my computer time so it doesn't interfere with "wife time."

I'm rather too connected.

I would revert to typing commands in Dos and dialing up bulletin boards with my 12K modem but at least I would have a color monitor ;)

Remember when 56K was super fast for a modem and a 20MB hard drive was considered huge (and very, very expensive)?

Yes, and yes.  Heck, the 56K modem was something of a unicorn.  The modem might have worked that fast, but none of the providers did.

I would probably wither away and die sooner, on the other hand maybe I would exercise and live longer!

It would be hard to live without it, I use it for everything.

I have a ton of recipes I have saved, enough for two lifetimes.

I predict my own weather, better than the forecasters.

I keep in touch with relatives, some I found on the net through genealogy research.

The only negative is there are always two sides, especially if something, food, is good for you or not. I give up on that, if it looks, and sounds good, I cook it and eat it!

I found a lot of good people here to talk BBQ and cooking!!!
