Title: Is this a good price?
Post by: txpops on September 26, 2013, 02:58:16 PM
Was looking at this today. http://www.mesquite-thorn.com/Plow_Disk_Cookers__Discada_.html
And here is the original craigslist posting I saw. http://collegestation.craigslist.org/hsh/3997613085.html
Looks interesting. I really like the charcoal cooking stand but I might just buy the plow disk to use on my SRG.
What do yall think? Is this a good price or is there a better deal out there?

Mike

Very cool! I like it. Seems like a fair price, and you can will it to you great-grand kids when you're done with it!

Seems fair. The charcoal burner looks interesting!

Here is the disc I use http://www.disc-it.com/shop/products-page/disc-it-accessories/disc-it-cooking-disc/ I also have the lid. I did not get their propane burner. I use it over a Char-Broil MPC and SRG, as well as open fires / charcoal, and a propane burner for deep frying. I enjoy cooking on it - very versatile and a lot of fun! Great for fajitas and more.

Is a disc much different than cooking in a wok?  I've two woks, one is a heavy cast iron model, and the other is relatively think carbon steel.  My home range is gas.  The iron wok takes a bit of time to heat up to wok temperature, but the steel one is able to cook within a minute or two.  The iron wok holds temperature very well, but the steel wok recovers much faster after the food somewhat cools it.

The SRG would be an ideal outdoor heating unit for the wok (or disc)

It's much like cooking in a wok, with a couple of exceptions - my disc is much larger than my wok and much shallower. While it will "work" as a wok, you don't have as steep of sides to move the food up as you cook some new things in the base. On the other hand because it is wide and shallow, it is great for doing things like fajitas - put the tortillas along the edge and cook the meat and veg in the center - all comes together easily.

I have a cast iron wok that I use on my SRG - works perfectly and gets very hot.

I guess I could get by with either, but I like both.  ;) ;D

Have you ever tried the disc on your SRG. If I get this plow disk it will be to use on my SRG. Do you think that will work? I really like the looks of this disc. And it's made right here in Texas!

I have not tried it on the SRG. It seems too large to me. The wok fits perfectly, and the disc fits the MPC perfectly, so I just never tried the SRG. Sorry. I will give it a try in the next couple of days.

Good point. I just emailed them to see how big this thing is. It doesn't look that big in pictures but I'd like to know for sure. The outdoor gourmet wok I've been looking at is 18".

Ah, I see... kind of reminds me of a Oaxacan comal (http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/02/6c/dd/24/filename-img-0782-jpg.jpg)

I always want to get one when I watch "Mexico, One Plate at a Time"

Seems like a reasonable deal.

OK they emailed me back and said, "The woks are 19 to 22 inches....you can cook 3 lbs of fajitas fairly easy and fry a considerable amount of fish".
I don't know if that is too big for my SRG or not.

Very much like that, pz.

I'm thinking it might be. But, I will try to check it out this evening.
