Title: Plump when you cook 'em?? Heck Yes!
Post by: happyappy on October 22, 2013, 05:56:15 PM
Some experiments just don't go as planned.   ???

I thought it would be nice to make something for my nieces that they would enjoy at an upcoming family gathering.  I also wanted to try out my new kabob rack for the beesr.  Looking in the fridge at what was available, a plan quickly came together.

What could be better than bacon wrapped pigs in a blanket!  Skewered and ready for the beesr...

It was meant to be...eight dogs and eight skewers...ready to slide into the preheated and smoking beesr.

No pictures as they cook because it was getting dark.  Trust me when I tell you those bacon wrapped dogs were looking incredible about 15 minutes into the cook.  The bacon was getting crispy, dogs had a nice smokey look to them.  Just a few more minutes and then I'll pull them to add the "blanket" of dough.

Well, as they say, timing is everything.  Five minutes later.......

Ball Park Franks explode when you cook 'em.

HA!!!  I didn't see that last pic coming!   :D

Were you able to get them wrapped anyway and save 'em, or did you just eat 'em as they were?

Oh yeah I'd still eat them, especially if there would be a jar of Slawsa in the vicinity!

Question.....What the hell is in Ballpark dogs that makes them blow-up, that is not in the rest of the world's dogs?   :-\                     One of my first big messes in a micro-wave was because of a Ballpark dog.  :o

Gene they are filled with TendaRub ???

Maybe the metal skewers got hot and cooked them from the inside contributing to their destruction?

Well like at the bright side... You could probably pile two to a bun now ;)

Uh Oh, does Smoke know about this TendaRub stuff in the dogs?
That would explain the nitro-like symptoms of grilling ribs the TendaRub-way!   :o

Now that's funny. Hopefully you wrapped the dough around them and pulled it all back together.

To several of you who asked...no, I didn't try to put them in a blanket after that.  But yes...we ate them and they were delicious!

I'll try this again using a "real" hotdog like Nathan's or Hebrew National.  I'm pretty confident I won't have the same issue.  We don't usually have ballpark franks but DW took advantage of a BOGO on on them.

And Doc...I'm with you.  I'm afraid to know what they put in those franks that makes them explode.

All's well that ends  well.  We had fun making them and really enjoyed eating them!

Actually..what happened was..they were wrapped too tight, maybe not too tight, but tight and with a hot rod in the middle of them, they got real hot and couldn't expand so they blew. Ballparks plump when ya cook'em. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  Pam .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ

One thing that would help to keep them from sliding down would be to thread something through the hot dog and the hole at the end of the skewer.  When the wiener gets hot it expands and loses its grip of friction on the skewer and slides down.
