Title: Orion Cookers??
Post by: Jaxon on November 18, 2013, 12:25:22 PM
A friend of mine told me about a cooker he has been using for about 4 years.  He absolutely loves it for ease-of-use and efficiency.

Here is a link:  http://www.theorioncooker.com/

Very intriguing...

I have a Rocket Roaster.  It is kind of the poor man's version of that.  It is nice, but you are out of luck if there is a burn ban in effect (which there is often in North Texas) since it is not enclosed at all.  I prefer the trash can turkey which is just a super-sized version of this (still my favorite way to cook a turkey).  Funny the things you learn how to do when you work outdoors (laid brick in my younger days).  Not exactly my version of trash can turkey linked below, but you'l get the idea.

That certainly is an interesting way to cook. I have not seen one like this before. Glad you brought this up.

It's a pretty slick cooker but not very safe around small children. It also has a higher danger of starting a fire with the design and use. Other than that, I really like it and have used it for about four years. It is also kinda expensive to use.

This is a 70 minute chicken.

Spare ribs cooked just 70 minutes.

Talk about a tailgate grill...6 slabs of spare ribs in 70-75 minutes.

Here it is doing its thing.

I have more information on my webpage on this cooker.

Hey, Dave, thanks for a great, detailed cook and review of this cooker.  I'll take your word when you rate it for taste, tenderness, and color.

I also saw the chicken you cooked therein and it reminded me of the Big Easy chicken.
I noted the need for a full bag of charcoal as recommended by the manufacturer. That turns me off.  I am wondering what would happen if 1/2  bag were used instead.  Of course, if you had another chicken ready to go, it would probably cook that one, too.

Oh, well, it would certainly suit well for those times when you need a "quickie" cook.

I noted the need for a full bag of charcoal as recommended by the manufacturer - kinda like the PBC.

Er…Jack - the PBC does not need a full bag of charcoal. I would say close to 1/2 of a 16lb. bag is closer to the actual amount that the basket holds. And - it is a really different type of cooker that the Orion.

The Orion is more like a Big Easy...I think ( there are more educated/experienced on this cooker here than me...) in that the PBC is a 275-325F range of temp cooker. Looks like the Orion is a high temp. machine, more like the Big Easy.

Slick idea. But I feel one would need to keep a garden hose handy, the kids away, and pick a calm day.  I checked the links for the Rocket Roaster and the trashcan turkey.  Very interesting, to say the least.

We have had one for a few years and have tried a couple of different cooks in it. Everything has turned out good but turkey is my favorite thing to cook in it.  This is my go to cooker for turkey.
