Title: Steamed Lobster Tails
Post by: Smokin Don on December 01, 2013, 09:31:45 AM
Nov 30 2013

I had said turkey was not my favorite holiday meal. I ended up having turkey and it was good even if it was catered by Bob Evans! We ate it for two days and I am tired of it; time to move on to some good food!

Lobster tail was my pick and my favorite if I can’t have meat. I had two ½ pound tails from Sams Club; wild caught from the Bahamas. I wanted to steam them and looking up how long to cook I learned that cold water lobster is supposed to be better than warm water. Warm water lobster will have yellow spots and a yellow stripe on the tail. Never too old to learn!

We had the steamed lobster tails, melted garlic chive butter, a baked potato with sour cream, a salad and some good crusty bread. For an easy no fuss meal it doesn’t get much better!

My wife better not see these pictures.  I would have to go on a scouting mission to find some lobster tails.  Looks really good, Don.

On special occasions or when I just want to get lucky I will grill up a couple of those Sams lobster tails and grill a couple of filet mignon steaks since that is my wife's favorite meal.

That looks fantastic!

Lobster tails are usually our New Years Eve dinner stuffed with crab, shrimp, onions, green pepper and spices. The only place we can get them is at Sam's Club frozen, but that is better than nothing.

How long did you steam them for?
I got this chart from lobsterhelp.com I thought my 8 oz. ones were a little overdone at 20 minutes in my Aroma rice cooker and steamer. Don

Lobster Cooking Times
For steaming a lobster tail
Lobster Tail Weight   Cooking Time
2 Oz.    10 minutes
4 Oz.    12 minutes
6 Oz.    15 minutes
8 Oz.    20 minutes
12 Oz.    25 minutes
14 Oz. +    30 minutes

Thanks,

The last ones I did I grilled them but I never know how to tell when they are ready. I am worried that if I pull too early they will be undercooked and if I leave too long I will waste a tail.
