Title: Time for Comfort Food
Post by: Smokin Don on December 15, 2013, 10:53:21 AM
Dec 14 2013

Like a lot of you in the northern climates I kind of slow down on cooking outdoors and need some comfort food. We have had a week of 20’s weather and it warmed up to 32 deg. for an overnight and daytime snow, about 4 inches. I got the drive and front walks cleaned out in the morning. By noon the snow had stopped so used the shovel and went over the drive and walks again.

I had three nice pork chops from my butcher, some steamer red potatoes and some cabbage left over from making kraut so that would make a good supper. This would be about as simple as I could make it.
I put a layer of the red potatoes in the bottom of my Crockpot, a layer of chopped cabbage. I browned the chops, a little salt & pepper on top.  They went on top and added about a quart of chicken stock. The chops would steam on top. I got it on at 12:30 on high for 1 ½ hours then on low until supper time.

I had my kitchen cleaned up and was just finishing shoveling snow when the dil came to do some Christmas baking. That girl can do a lot in a short time, by 6:00 she had several kinds of candy snacks made, about 6 small and 1 large pumpkin breads baked and my kitchen all clean. She and the grandson went home for their supper.

Our supper was ready in the Crockpot, served with some cheese focaccia and butter. I had mine with the potatoes mashed and some butter, salt and pepper over top. That hit the spot!

There are a lot of great cooks going on now, sorry don’t always have time to comment but I am looking and drooling!

Indoors…outdoors…THAT is good cooking' Don!

And - we are considering a name change fort eh forum, to reflect that we are not strictly about "BBQ"…. I think all of us here know that, but it may encourage folks browsing the 'net for a new place to call home - that we are as open minded to any cooking' as possible!

My wife is crazy for pork chops and yours look great ;D.

I agree us northern folks need to do different things because of the cold. MAK needs to develop an insulated cover for their smokers :(

Tim I like the present name.  It says it all, main attraction being BBQ, but the And More says it ALL.
How 'bout,  Let's Talk BBQ and MORE Good Cookin'
Be a shame to dispose of site's good name and progress.   just sayin'

Food looks great Don! I like the bread slices with brie? Camembert?

I like hikermans start.  Just a bit of brainstorming here.  Because we see almost as many kitchen creations, an expansion might be appropriate. In recent times we've seen the addition of outdoor pizza ovens, creative kitchen techniques, and just about anything related to food, how about something like Let's Talk BBQ and All Good Cooking.

No apologizes needed Tee or anyone! A good discussion but I agree with most we are a Q site and any extras are just goodies. The cold weather slows us all down from our BBQ outdoors and even in good weather we can't eat BBQ 3 times 7 and we all like to share our cooks. I vote to keep our present name! Don
