Title: Molasses slathered Pork Butt
Post by: mikecorn.1 on December 23, 2013, 03:31:04 PM
Did an overnighter. Took 15 hours to bring it to 195. Had the maverick standing guard all night. It all went smooth.
Here are the players. I injected about a cup of apple cider vinegar and apple juice mix with some of the seasoning in it. Then slathered with molasses and dusted with some Zack's. Got down to a bone chilling 47F last night ;) :D plus it was windy. I covered the Traeger with some old towels that I keep around for this exact thing. Works like a champ. Here are the pics.

Looks great Mike! Porkie butt always gets me hungry.  :P

Someone here suggested a welding blanket for cold cooks, I found one at a welding supply for just over 25.00. Works great!

Looks like you remembered how to cook during your absence Mike.  If you need me to confirm that, head up 45 until you see that big D and drop me off a plate.

Awesome looking pork butt and photos Mike! I agree with Don about the use of towels.
A cheap welding blanket could save you lots of bucks!

Yup, I've also read that. When I get around to it, I will get one myself. Just something I don't think about till it gets cold

I know what you're saying Mike. We know it's gonna get cold, but put things off hoping it won't get cold! I do it often!  ::)

I don't have any first-hand experience with them but I've read that some welding blankets shed fiberglass.

This one is supposed to be felt-like and fiberglass free — http://www.amazon.com/Tillman-Welding-Blanket-Thermofelt-615/dp/B0042AU5HW (http://www.amazon.com/Tillman-Welding-Blanket-Thermofelt-615/dp/B0042AU5HW)

Great job on the butt Mike!

And there is no shame in eating grill scrapins' that look that good. Much better than toaster leavins' ;)

Wish it had been 47 here last week when I did my last one for a church dinner.  In addition to being in the mid 20's, it was fairly windy and had a hard time keeping the temp steady to smoke, even with another big grill as a windbreak (using the 940x with SMK attachment).  Finally gave up, double wrapped in foil and finished in the oven.   Just wasn't the same, and think it didn't get warm enough (certainly not enough smoke) in those two hours to make it act like a real butt.    Very disappointed.  I eventually got it pulled, but the flavor was far from what I expected.

Looks Excellent...I just did a brisket with a molasses brushing and I really like the bark it created....
