Title: My Southern Roots
Post by: Old Hickory on January 02, 2014, 03:26:49 PM
I was raised in middle Tennessee, and my family, at least four generations that I know of, always considered having blackeyed peas, greens, pork, and cornbread on New Years day the meal for good luck the following year.  I have lived here in California for 43 years, but I always continue this tradition,,,,,,, and I consider myself and my family very lucky.

Kicked up blackeyed peas:

Turnip and mustard greens:

Homemade cornbread:

Plated with pork shoulder that I had smoked/cooked previously, and Cabernet wine made from grapes grown on my Ranch.

The blackeyed peas and greens were cooked with smoked ham hocks.  The meal was great and the first of my good luck for the year.

That meal looks great.  I wish I knew more about cooking greens.  I used to eat them at a restaurant called Po Folk.

Cabernet wine made from grapes grown on my Ranch.

What could be cooler than that?

That is as Southern as it gets! That is a good looking plate. Since I have been old enough to remember that is pretty much what I have had on New Years Day. Those cornbread sticks look great. I need to dig one of my corn stick pans out and start using it. This year did fried cornbread (some call them hoe cakes) instead of her usual cast iron skillet cornbread.

We haven't had a Po Folks here in years and there were great and cheap. I miss them.

Brings back fond old memories of mornings with country steak, grits, eggs, and Hoover gravy.  Leftovers were always placed on the stove for all day snacking.

I just love greens - yours looks perfectly cooked as does the rest of the plate.

That's the way I grew up, also. Since, I have lived in the big city for a while, lunch is now at noon and dinner is the main evening meal. I guess I feel much more suave and sophiscated now.

Looks like home to me...  While you out there teach them to make cornbread and brew "ice Tea" properly!   ;D
