I have become confident with roasting in my SRG, how've grilling is another matter. No matter what I've tried I seem to get tough overcooked meats despite the temp being right. This included chicken breasts, steak, and burgers.
Any trick to this? Do you grill at high or low temps?

I have a cast iron grate that works great on the srg. I use the high heat when grilling on mine. It cooks fast too. I preheat the cast iron, sometimes add a lil smoke and just go for it. Pam .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

Thanks Pam. It is good to see familiar faces here! How are you enjoying the winter we are having so far??
I have the grate as well. I have tried high, low, open, closed, etc. What do you find the cooking times to be?

I cook to temp..165 -170 for chicken. I like medium rare 130ºish for steaks and 145º for porks. Love my thermapens. I can tell by looking at them but I check them anyways.
Winter sucks...had snow the entire winter and never been so cold. Glad ya made it here, your gonna see lots of friends here. .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

It took me a few tries, but once it's warmed up (15 mins on high) then you have a very good grill. Just make sure you brush you meat with a little oil then grill away. If you oil the grate it's just gonna burn off

When high temp grilling with infrared anything you are cooking needs careful attention to avoid being overcooked. Lots of turning and checking helps. Once you get experience it becomes natural.
A Thermapen or other instant read thermometer helps to check your if your protein is done.
And remember to pull it off 5 to 10 degrees before your target temp because it will continue to cook after you remove it.
Avoid cutting it until it has cooled for a bit otherwise the steam will release moisture and the meat will be more dry.

I think I will need to invest in athermapen for father's day! I've been using a Maverick Redi-Fork and am not sure of its accuracy...

Just reiterating .
Grill on high.
Takes a little warmer to warm up ....15 min minimum.
Cooks fast, I cook first side with lid down & second lid up.

Pappy is right - unless he is wrong (as in this case... ;) ;D) British Racing Green is OF COURSE the fastest.
Consider the Thermopop (same folks that make the Thermopen) maybe a hair slower, but way cheaper and has a cool rotating display feature. I am loving mine. And if you get the Green one - you won't notice the difference it is SO fast... ;) ;D ;D

Agree, I have the RED one too and it is very fast. ;)

I haven't had mine long, but I have grilled on it several times. I heat mine up on high for 10 to 15 minutes and then turn it to low, unless it is steak. No matter what you grill you need to turn often. Checking internal temp is important and something like chicken breast will dry out quickly. Don't give up, this is one of the best gas grills I have ever used in all my seventy years.
