If anyone offers you an Apple Pepper (looks a lot like a green habanero) please don't assume you can just take a bite like you would an apple... not a good idea!
Was wandering through our new neighborhood supermarket - Dragon Star. It reflects the changing dynamic of the "hood." There is 3/4 of an aisle labeled "American Food" the rest is not.
The variety and diversity of foods and ingredients is amazing - it's like being back in Hawaii or better! The produce section is probably 40% totally unknown to me - what a blast. And the seafood - yikes!
There is a great deli with Bahn Mi and curry, spring rolls and bao...
Every time I go, I find new stuff... but...
Don't try to eat the apple peppers out of hand... just sayin'...
-
I haven't been to an Asian market in a long time, but I remember the prices being much better for main stream stuff, hoisin sauce, fish sauce and the like.
Is that still true?
-
Pappy, the prices are silly low! It is incredible. Bought some peppers (green yellow, red, orange) less than a third of Rainbow or Cub prices. Picked up some thin sliced sirloin (making fajitas) 1.99 a pound - well marbled and look great. A pound of shitake mushrooms for 89 cents!
Not sure how they make money, but hope they do and stay around!

Do you like hot sauce? There is over half an aisle with nothing but hot sauce... all the ones you know and a few dozen more... YIKES! ???
Picked up some pickled bamboo shoots - ohhhh so good. I know the taste from many meals, good to know what to add for that flavor. Kimchee in 5 gallon jars... oh my!

I don't do much in the way of hot sauce. I may have to take a road trip.

Thanks for the warning. My eyes are watering, and I don't even know what that pepper is.
-
Wow,lucky you!
-
Also beware of peppers labeled Cherry peppers. Some are extremely hot, some are just like bells.
I made the mistake of getting one of the hot ones and popped it all in my mouth at once. Will NEVER
do that again! ??? :( 8)

Soy sauce = dozens... sesame oil - yikes... some Saturday when you have some time, come on up - we'll do a day trip through this place and make something on the grill... It will be a blast!

You are always welcome - give me a 15 minute notice and we'll set a plate for you!

Sounds like a fun trip to the market David.... We have a large Asian community in the city I work and it is really interesting and fun going into their markets for me. I love rice seasonings with seaweed and different fish in it.
-
Keymaster - I am with you. This place has more fish than I can ever name!
-
David, will be in cities Saturday and then back north Sunday. Where is this market?
-
Paul,
Here is the address - 8020 Brooklyn Blvd, Brooklyn Park, MN 55445. It's just a 1/2 mile from my house. I have a Softball picnic in the afternoon and a graduation party in the evening on Saturday. But, I am open in the morning if you want to grab a cup of coffee or breakfast and visit the store.

Made a quick trip to metro area this past weekend, in on Saturday back home Sunday. Did manage a nice visit and breakfast with DR Holly. Took his advice and checked out the new asian market. He is right, one clean large store with lots of choices in fish, meat poultry. You name it. Filled cooler before drive home.
David, thanks for the visit and the tip on the market

Paul,
It was great to see you and catch up. We need to get some more of the Minnesota contingent together and have an evening of grilling and story telling.
I hope to make it up North this summer.
Best regards,
David
