Alright well we are finally settled in the new house so I can start to BBQ more, right? I think I need to upgrade into a new grill, what or where can I get some sound advice?

What cookers if any do you have?

Welcome from Minnesota!
Do you want to hear what I like or what I want???
Your FIL knows what he's talking about - trust him... but don't expect pictures... just sayin'... ;) ;D

Greetings from north Texas. Honest question... are you looking to smoke, grill or both?
-
Second welcome from Minnesota. Your FIL posts pics that are magazine quality.

First welcome from Alabama!
Since Dee is your father in-law I'm sure he has leaned you towards INFRARED grills which I totally agree!
But, with your back ground in cooking I'd also toss in a ceramic grill such as a BGE or the likes and even add a CharBroil 940x
looking forward to seeing Monday night at dinner

I'm in my own quandary about that same question...I'm gonna have to "kick the can down the road".
B T W, welcome to the forum..."Uncle Devious" is a pretty nice guy most of the time. I'm sure he's a good friend as a father-in-law.

Your FIL is right, you do need to cook more BBQ. Instead of making a rash decision about any particular grill or type of grill, I would recommend reading the posts here about the various types of grills and then attending the Fall Gathering and cooking on a few of them. You will gain first hand experience and have access to a lot BBQ knowledge. Right now Sparky (LTBBQ Rib Meister, extraordinaire) is planning to attend and show us all how to cook some serious ribs.
Over time you will probably do like a lot of us here. We add a new grill or type of cooking to our collection every now and then. And that's not all bad!

Hey, Brad. Good to hear from you. Congrats on the new job. At the last Fall Gathering, you showed us some serious cooking skills. Hope that you can make it again this year.

I certainly tasted that Wagu brisket that Turtle provided and Brad cooked at the last gathering..best I ever had..WTG Brad. Pam .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

I guess I'm joining the discussion a little late but it's not like you really need any advice on how to cook (per the spot on comments about your brisket skills last year). I do, however, find that the more I play with other "cooking platforms" the more I like the results you get with a (an?) UDS using split wood or charcoal. The only issue is that I'm too old and lazy to tend one so I go to my "set and forget" cookers (PBC, OBS, & SRG) for most things.

You need a Rec Tec for good solid cooked.... You need an Acorn for char coal and just plain fun cooking, a small IR for searing and quick meals, a WSM for long slow smokes. that should get you a pretty good base for getting started.
By the way I know this is late cause I somehow missed it earlier. Welcome from Lower Alabama. Hope to see you this fall !
