Dad's first drink with his son
« Reply #-1 on: July 08, 2014, 08:35:12 AM »
I was reading an article last night about fathers and sons.
Memories came flooding back of the time I took my son out for his first pint.
Off we went to our local pub which is only two blocks from the house.
I got him a Fosters, he didn't like it – so I had it.  Then I got him a Pabst Blue Ribbon, he didn't like it, so I had it.  It was the same with the 1664 Lager and the Stella Artois.
By the time we got down to the Scotch I could hardly push the stroller back home.

That's funny.  I didn't see the punchline coming, so hooray.

The one funny memory I have of me and my dad going out to the bar was my 21st birthday.  We were both boilermaker drinkers, and as any good Yinzer (someone from Pittsburgh) will tell you a proper boilermaker is an Imp 'n' Ahn (Imperial Whiskey and Iron City Beer).  Frankie, the bartender was an old family friend who had lived next door to us for years and a native Brit who swore more than any drunken sailor that I have ever met.  When she asked what the occasion was, my dad told her it was my birthday.  She asked me what birthday, and I told her 21.  She then proceeded to smack me and let out a couple of minutes worth of curse words that had "bloody hell" about every 3 seconds along with a bunch of others that I can't type here.  You see I was 3 years younger than her oldest son who she had apparently (since she had been serving me for 3 years) convinced herself that I was the same age as.  In my defense, I grew up close to the WV border where it took them a little longer than PA to adopt the federal age 21 drinking law and replace their age 18 law.

That was funny.  :P

First time I sat at a bar with my Dad and had a beer served to me I was a freshman in high school, yep 15 years old and I had just gotten my first drivers license too.  They like to get us off to an early start in Louisiana.   :P

Here in Alien Land, legal drinking age has always been 21, BUT, if you were out with your parents and they ordered you a drink, had it served to them, they could then give it to you with no problem.   That changed quite a few years ago and we can't do that anymore.    When I went to school in Boulder, the legal age for 3.2 beer was 18--no wonder CU was known as a party school.   FAC (Friday afternoon club at either the Sink or Tulagi), buying Coors 3.2 by the pitcher for ONLY $1.00.   Went through many a pitcher of suds while there!  When I turned 21, went to buy my first bottle (legally--plead the Fifth before that!) and was disappointed they didn't card me!   Sign on the door said, "This place recommended by Drunken Hines."  You have to be close to my age to appreciate that!
