WOW, that stinks (sorry no pun intended)  :(

I have been lucky I have never had an issue with ours (calling Kimmie as I type this to check ours) ;) ;)

But the bright side is like you said you get to smoke and cook a lot more to refill the new one

D@mn, sorry to her about that.  I like the idea of the beeper.  Going to have to order one of those.

Any chance that it was due to a random (storm related) power surge and maybe part of the loss would be covered by your insurance?

I don't think it was a power surge.  Got the beer fridge plugged into the same GFCI and it is working fine.  GFCI never faulted.  Fridge and freezer are in the garage.  The chest freezer was a Magic Chef and was given to us so no telling how old it was.  As for the insurance I have a high deductible and the meat cost would not meet the deductible.   After reading reviews of the Magic Chef I am surprised that it even lasted the 1 year that we had it. I am betting that the sealed unit developed a leak and then the compressor seized up.  That is what most of the people say in the reviews of the Magic Chef anyway.  The new freezer is scheduled to be delivered Saturday just in time for weekend smoking  ;D

Well, I might as well add to the freezer stories.
My Dad was a commercial fisherman years ago, and my Brother had his 9 sq ft chest freezer stocked to the rafters with ling cod, salmon, and a lot of abalone.
Sacramento, full on summer, his son, unplugged it for some reason ........ ahem ....... and forgot to plug it back in.
Well lucky for my brother he was a volunteer fire man, and had to have his station respond with haz mat suits to dispose of the whole freezer it was so bad, it was a boiling mess.

That seriously sucks Jim, they make a beeper if your freezer goes warm.

And there's may more models to choose from, the ones we use at work are far to expensive for the home owner and actually call us at 2 in the morning.
going to get one of these for sure......thanks for the heads up!
x2.ordered.

A friend of my used to manage an apartment building. They had a tenant that decided to take a month long trip to Europe in August. The problem is that they did not pay their electric bill. After several complaints from other tenants about the horrible smell emanating from the apartment he used his key to open and investigate.

My friend described what he saw was a meat explosion in the kitchen. Seems the gas that built up in the fridge/freezer nearly blew the door off and rotten meat was all over the place. He said that he ended up closing the door and throwing up. :o

Had to get a special crew to clean up the mess and then billed the tenants when they returned from Europe.

The cleanup was not cheap and those tenants would have been much better off just taking care of their late electric bill in the first place.
