Renault Dauphine? All 32 horsepower??

We had several! My dad dragged one home one day after another robbery car repair and said Son,we are going to learn how to fix cars. I remember my Mom sitting at the kitchen table lapping valves with hand grinding compound. At age ten I could rebuild that motor with new pistons and liners and do a valve job. That had the smoothest 4 banger I have ever seen, great economy and next to no power and very tiny uncomfortable seats, and we stuffed a family of 6 in that thing.

We also had full sized cars like that great 57 chevy wagon, and a 64 falcon and a 67 mustang, but dad put on a billion miles and that goofy Renault did it CHEAP. We even painted one light blue with shaker cans, and mom tore out the upholstery and made new vinyl seats, that was a beauty!

So gots me some Renault stories too! ;D

Go several years and Dad died and Moms BF Coburn had the greatest cars ever,a Camper VW Van,a Singer,a Jeep....and a Citroen DS that was the coolest car I'd ever seen, what a MARVEL of engineering!

Really a great car—powerful and fast for the day.  I've only seen one in the states.  It belonged to a kinda' eccentric attorney in Bismarck, ND.  It had an air/oil suspension so it settled lower when the engine was shut off.  If he parked it next to high curbing he couldn't open the passenger doors until the engine started and the car raised back up so the doors cleared the curb.  It was self-jacking for tire changes.  Just raise the suspension all the way up, support the frame with a stand and lower the suspension all the way down.  The body would settle and the wheel at the supported corner would raise.

The backs of the front seats folded down to make a full-size bed and the windows had factory installed curtains for privacy.  (Only the French.)  Those features generated a lot of discussion.

I was a car guy and worked for GM over 48 years as a field service dealer contact person.  My first car was a 1937 Buick Straight Eight Coupe; long hood and short rear, no one could hardly sit in back seat, engine coolant was alcohol, next was a 1952 Ford Sedan Flat Head V-8, I carried a gallon can of oil and had to put some in on every gas fill up; next was a 1955 Olds Four Door with a 4BBL carb and 4 speed automatic, I thought this car was fast in its day; next a brand new 1965 Corvette Convertible, paid $4325 for it; next a 1968 Corvette Convertible 427 with 3 two barrel Carbs, a fast car.  Over the years working for GM, I got a new car or truck to drive about every 3 months.  Could order and drive pretty much what I wanted except limited Corvettes.  I drove everything from Vegas, Chevettes, 15 passenger vans, Citations, etc. etc.  Some of those cars were not good, but GM did build some good products.  All those new cars, kinda made a new car not much of a big deal.  I am now and retired, and drive an old man's 2000 Buick Century.  This car has a 3.1 liter V-6, and believe it or not I can push 33 mpg with it when I drive it easy.  If I had a lot of extra money, I would like to get a new car, but now all the money goes for kids and grandkids.

You've had some great cars.

..1955 Olds Four Door with a 4BBL carb and 4 speed automatic, I thought this car was fast in its day...

It was.

Along about then Oldsmobile offered an engine with three two-barrel carburetors, the J2.  When I was in high school a friend had one in an early 30s Plymouth three-window coupe.  I think it was a '32 or '33.  It was a beautiful car and blazing fast with that engine.

I'm a "car guy" who doesn't own any except for my current Nissan pickup and my wife's Impala.  If I had a lot of money, I'd have a barn full of antique cars -- especially the "off" models that don't get heavy play like Hudsons and Studebakers.  Alas, I'm waiting on a lottery ticket, too.  The good news is that many of the BBQ contests where I judge or compete also have car shows.  Love to browse the grounds and remember great wheels from the 50's 60's and 70's especially.  Really, really , really, really wish I'd kept my 1965 Stingray  :(

Thanks for posting your collection and welcome!

Hub - you need to come to Nashville and check out the Lane Motor Museum. They have a great collection (mostly European) of one offs and different vehicles that would blow your mind. Admission is fairly cheap ($9 for adults), and any car nut could spend the better part of a day in there.

Hub:  I bought my 1965 Corvette Convertible, dark green, two tops, white top and interior new for $4325.  I sold it in 1968 for $2800 and thought that I got top dollar.  Me too, I sure wish that I had that car back.

That V6 is/was a world beater of a fine engine. And that century was a nice car too IMO. My stock 1967 Jeepster has the first V6 GM made,an  oddfire, they just cut 2 cylinders off a v8.Idles like a huge cam motor, but its a fine engine for sure

. My wife would turn into a mean race car driver every time we made a trip to my Moms. When she turned onto a back road about 2 miles long she would put the pedal to the metal, I loved that look she got! She would back off at 85. The fastest I ever had it was 105.

Long but thanks for letting me reminisce!

Smokin Don
Now thats funny. Now my Mom in her later years looked like Granny Clampett,I kid you not,and was the epitome of the Little Old Lady from Pasadena.

One car she had was like a 65,67? Fastback Barracuda with a 340,that puppy was fast. Then she went the Big LTD'S with the monster V8's,and some monster Buick I cant remember with a 455 was it?

Anyhow, those that were power monsters and she always had her foot in it.

One time I get a phone call from her about 3 AM.You need to come to Palm Springs and pick me up,I have a flat. Hmmm..a flat??

She was running out of gas and figured the faster she drove, the quicker it would get her home.I SWEAR this is true, she's clipping along in the 69 LTD (geeze I loved that dark green car) out in the middle of nowhere doing 'about 100 MPH'.Went off road, hit a sand berm, launched it like the Dukes of hazzard  :o and when she landed flattened all FOUR tires.

One trippy old lady for sure!

As I remember it, the 455 engine was also in Olds and Pontiacs.  My dad had an Olds and that big engine was choked out by a 2 bbl carburetor.  You have to wonder what the engineers were thinks of by putting together a package like that.

We were in Hawaii for a few weeks.  Marcia loved it.  Me—not as much.

When we came home I bought this.  I love it.  Marcia—not as much.

It's a Triumph Rocket III.  It's appropriately named.  It scares me somewhat even though I've had some experience with fast motorcycles.  (I quit flat-tracking in 1972.  For those of you familiar with the AMA rules I never made Expert so I always had a red number.)  But with 140 Cu In and 160 Ft Lbs of torque, it leaves hard

my favorite cars were a 59 bug w/ no gas gauge (used a stick to put it in the gas tank to see how much fuel there was) and a little lever on the inside that when you ran out of gas you moved this lever w/ your foot and that gave you 1 gallon left.  I loved my 67 bug.  bought it for $1500 and sold it for $4000.  wife said no more VW's.   :(
