I have noticed a couple of us are on diets.....Low carb is in this year
« Reply #-1 on: March 30, 2017, 05:02:13 PM »
I have set a short term goal to lose 25 Lbs & long term goal of 55 to 60 lbs.

OK for the fun of it by date or lbs what is the meal you have in your mind once you reached your date/goal.

For me it is a Tomahawk Steak (a big one) & a large baked potato with both sour cream & butter, a few beers, With a fresh blue cheese salad & Italian bread.  Cooked on my Webber 18 inch charcoal grill. That is the 25 Lbs meal.

For the 55 Lbs meal the same but with a Shrimp cocktail & Russian dressing salad with bacon (lots of it) & more beer.

For the record I have already lost over 5 lbs so I am on my way but would love all of your support in this goal...I need fans lol

Anyone else plan a big meal when their goal is reached.  Thanks to Tommy for inspiring me with his weight loss. Great job Tommy.

It is not a diet that you are seeing....It is that a lot of us have discovered that the "cycle" of dieting...is only making things ultimately worse for out health.
I think what you are seeing is a genuine  trend in the understanding of what we will be eating from now on...Because there is more " from now on" ;) to be had if we will change how we are eating... ;) ;D Make sense?

So - the emphasis is to shift our diet ( not "DIET" in reference to a short period of time - rather a permanent choice of foods selected) to more protein, and less simple carbs and sugars. You will see various methods - by name - but this is the commonality.

Atkins started this trend years ago, and it has since been moderated, learned from, and morphed into various "named diets" and grown into a much more easy adapt to, and HEALTHIER way not get rid of the excess weight that is KILLING us too soon.
But the takeaway is simple: clearly - more protein - in balance and variety of protein - and less carbs will help your metabolism and weight will come off. It just works. And - their is significant evidence that it is a heart healthier approach as well.  All very positive.

Lose the weight...lose the diabetes...gout...problems with joints....and live longer. That is the goal - but it is a fixed goal for those I have spoken to ...in other words, not something to do to drop a few pounds - then bounce it back on plus more weight ( which is what happens on these crazy, crash weight loss plans.)

We can all still love our BBQ...and everything else...but now in ways - and portions that are better for us. 8) And isn't it great that we can all benefit by sharing these ideas? Helping someone else to be a better healthier version of themselves seems like a rewarding hobby to me ;D Especially when we ALL love our food so much.

Yep, I agree with Tim. For me it was NOT a choice, but a necessity to switch to a low carb LIFESTYLE, and I am already seeing great results!

Two things to note about low carb: "Low carb" does NOT mean "no carb", nor does it mean "high protein"!

When I met with my Diabetes nutritionist a few weeks ago, she recommended this book:  The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living - Volek & Phinney

I agree! With me it will be a lifestyle change & as I am almost 6-6 The weight I plan to lose is not that much & it will take me some  time to do it........ But......that will leave me a few days to reward myself with overeating :D :D :D. Also exercise is to be included in my lifestyle as this helps keep us standing up. It is an entire program for me.

What works best for me is to set goals with rewards

I am glad to hear others are seeing results from lifestyle changes.

In Nov 16 is was diagnosed T2.  Been on BP medicine for years.

Started consuming information about eating as a diabetic.  Thanks to the internet and various forums, blogs and videos I discovered there are others just like me.  Glad to have found this forum because a passion of mine is BBQ.  My grills and smokers can still fit into my daily meal routine.  Weather it's meats or new ways to prepare low carb vegatables.  "Who knew asparagus could be so good."

Since that day, right before Thanksgiving, I am down 80 lbs.  My doctor was amazed at the improvements in my A1C, BP and Cholesterol levels.  Says that we will follow up again in May and will look to start removing some of my medications.

So when people ask me how long I am going to "diet," I respond that I am not on a diet, I am living.

The reason there are SO many like you - is that we have lulled ourselves into mass hypnosis - that eating too much of the wrong things is.."O.K."...And - the commercials drive deep into your psychology that eating huge portions is good....SO, we have become the fattest and one of the least healthy countries on Earth. Some of us even try to defend that :D :D :D Until we have a stroke, heart attack, diabetes or other FORCED "reexamination of our lifestyle choices". Good for you that you are being pro-active.

Man - THAT is great! I am happy for you and I know you feel better. More energy, and happier in knowing that you are going to enjoy BBQ and outdoor cooking much longer than if you had continued your former lifestyle.

So when people ask me how long I am going to "diet," I respond that I am not on a diet, I am living.

Dude..those are words to live  ;) ;D by. Keep going. There are folks that will try to drag you down - don't listen. They may be jealous, or afraid that your changes will change your friendship with them. DO not abandon them. And, allow everyone the opportunity to be who they chose to be without judgement.

As far as others judging me and my "eating plan" I don't listen.    I know what's working and I have enough common sense to do what's right for me.     I'm down 25 lbs so far and would like another 25 off before bathing suit time  ;)

Really, joking aside I have really done better than I thought and knowing I'm 51 and out of shape really keeps me focused on what to do.
