You are so right about the HOT spot at 5 0'clock. Thats the reason I tell anyone with a "Tommy Ring" to start their run of pellets or wood chips there and just so happens CharBroil placed the smoking chamber there as well. Now that being said, if you noticed the middle tots in the basket were a little darker then the others it's due to the top not being vented. If you vented the top like my units that would no longer happen.
All the tots would cook the same, I showed this back at one of the gatherings in GA a few years back with bacon wrapped crackers.
