Aaron Franklin's Masterclass
« Reply #-1 on: August 11, 2019, 01:01:19 PM »
For those that don't know, there is a company out there that offers up different "Master Classes" by various professionals to teach you about Photography, Directing, Acting, so forth and so on. Well, Aaron has put together a comprehensive tutorial basically explaining all of his methods as if you were working for him and he was training you.

I have been interested in this as I'd love to pick his brain but I have had reservations about a couple of things. The first being whether or not you're getting the "TRUE" method to his madness or just being shown what he wants you to see, I know that he claims to only use salt and pepper in his rub but one of his ex-employees says that's baloney. Maybe the classes would divulge more? Secondly I think the price is steep albeit it cheaper than paying for a class with Myron Mixon or the like.

From what I can tell, it's $90 for one lesson or $15.00/mo for something and $180.00 for all access or whatever that means, lol.

Skip to the chase, I watched the lessons, skimmed through the fire management side of things and went to the prep and smoking or the meats, skimmed over the BBQ sauce parts. Conclusion? It's the SAME stuff he's already shown in his PBS videos for free. He's done a  trimming video at some college that is on YouTube as well. There's is nothing new under the sun with this "Masterclass" so if you've been tempted to try it, don't waste your money.

I LOVE his BBQ and am thankful for his knowledge but this seems like a cash grab to me, just being honest. The ONLY nugget that was in there that I have not heard him really touch on is that he has a "method" of feeling the brisket to know when it's done, versus using a thermometer. Other than that.....not groundbreaking knowledge being delivered.
A revolving door of cookers and smokers. Some are keepers, some are here today, gone tomorrow!

Thanks for the inut. By the way, even the "new nugget" about using touch is in one of the other videos I have seen on you tube.
Why couldn't Noah have swatted the 2 mosquitoes?.

If you have Netflix, check out the series "The Chef Show". There's an episode with Aaron and he goes into great detail on trimming/smoking a brisket. The show is from Jon Favareau who directed the movie Chef. The entire series is really interesting and recommend watching all the episodes.

Good advice, RG.  One thing that's always kept me away from them is simply the fact that I'm never going to cook on their type of equipment.  I'm sort of a one trick pony in that regard.  I'm happy with my Webers and they do every conceivable thing I need done.  I guess if Harry Soo made a trip to the Southeast, I might wander by . . . . .

Thanks for the honest review!

Like Gus said, even this isn't really groundbreaking.  Don't get me wrong; I love his PBS series and have absolutely no problems with anyone capitalizing on their success.  But, for years many of us on this very forum have been saying to use a "feel" method rather than a thermometer, and we're not charging a dime.

Now having said that, his "master Class" may be well worth the money for those who are new to Low & Slow BBQ.  It's sure a whole lot less $$ than the price some of these guys are charging for a weekend of live classes. Yikes!  ???
