Just a Little Crawfish Boil
« Reply #-1 on: March 15, 2020, 07:01:05 AM »

So yesterday was my wife's birthday and I decided to boil crawfish for here.  I picked up a sack of 34 pounds yesterday just before noon and after cleaning off most of the patio(per her request, Lol......)got the boil going. These were a lil on the small to medium size.

Here they are after getting a cool water rinsing.

The usual fixins which I kept pretty basic due to the craziness of the supermarkets being packed with Corona shoppers. Celery, onions, garlic, small red potatoes(these if any leftover always make a fantastic potato salad the next day.)lemons and oranges I still had on my tree and two kinds of seasonings. Also some fresh Cajun and green onion sausage which came out really pretty darn good.

Done boiling and time to let 'em soak up some good seasoning.

Now it's time to eat! Didn't get a picture of but there was also corn on the cob in there also.

No pictures of them served but they were pretty darn delicious and the wife thoroughly enjoyed them. We'll be doing this again pretty soon.

That looks good. I am the only one in my house that likes crawfish so I never do these. Hard to buy a small amount for one person unless I go out.

Just order a sack, boil them and have friends over. It's a social gathering kinda thing.

Yes I understand its a social thing, but no one I work with or hang out with like them. We do get together for other BBQ's just never crawfish.

No offense but it could possibly that they just haven't had them done correctly. I've heard crazy ways people think that crawfish should be boiled. Ranging from way too much salt to so hot they were inedible and even boiled with too little seasoning and they end up tasting terrible.

I agree with people not knowing how to cook or prep them.  They need to be purged (in my opinion) anyway.   I like to add mushroom caps and whole garlic pods cut in half. Yours sure look good!
I have been wanting to do some. My grandkids will all line up at the table for them.
I may have to cheat and run over to the causeway and get some for lunch!

I've never tried Crawfish. Friends have told me if you can't get live, don't bother.

I've never tried Crawfish. Friends have told me if you can't get live, don't bother.

A friend of mine in north Alabama bought some Saturday at a local seafood market and told me he thinks they were frozen Chinese whole crawfish like you can buy at Walmart that with heated and soaked in seasoned water. Said they were the worst he ever had and at $4.00 a pound. I paid $1.75 a pound for live. I've seen the frozen whole crawfish at Walmart but never have and never would buy them.

So the answer to your comment is yes for eating crawfish boil style live is best. Unless you have a reliable seafood market that sells boiled fresh(U.S. farmed or wild caught)crawfish don't bother. Now you can buy frozen crawfish tails in 1 pound packages for cooking with for etouffee, gumbo or other cooked dishes. I like to keep a couple of pounds of Louisiana certified crawfish tails in the freezer for when I feel like cooking something. And yes, they do sell frozen crawfish tails packaged and frozen in China for less that the U.S. product.

Just curious on how you handle the vein in the crawfish?  I always make sure that the vein is removed in all the shrimp and lobster that I eat.  Do like the idea of eating poop.
