Growing up, my dad listened to country - all those you've mentioned along with Johnny Horton, Lefty Frizzel and others. He also listened to big band - Harry James, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Gene Krupa, Duke Ellington, etc... I have to admit - the jazz, swing and big band stuck a bit more than the country. Although my oldest daughter enjoys country (not the country pop stuff - real country... go figure...)

My Dad would say "If it aint country, it aint music". He would come home and replace my Led Zeppelin bootlegs with Merle Haggard albums  :D

I listen to big band, crooners (Great American Song Book) real country, jazz, classic rock, hey, even Bossa Nova...old smoke likes his tunes  :)

Most of my brothers, sisters and I played some sort of "instrument" while we were growing up. So, it was a tradition in the early evening as my dad listened to his records (yep Dee they were 33's) he'd call us in when our instrument was featured. I played the trumpet and flugelhorn - so, Harry James was a lock for me. Gosh how I struggled with Flight of the Bumblebees... My youngest brother was a drummer (still is - has a band together from time to time) and he grew up on Gene Krupa. One sister played the sax - poor kid was called for almost everything... My youngest sister played the flute - she was smart.... My middle brother didn't play... I guess he thought he was the smartest...

It annoyed us all back then. But, at least for me, it is now a wonderful memory. My dad is getting older and we enjoy talking about those days and listening to the music again.

If you ever need a good air guitarist to sit in David, you just let me know...my gee-tar doesn't even need a carrying case  :D :D

In all seriousness though, that is a great story about your family. Music is so universal, it can bring people together...except for gangsta rap  >:(

Interesting thread.  As I looked at the photo I focused on the oak desk.  The Bell System must have ordered a million of them.  As offices converted to cubicles and modular furniture they had so many of those surplus desks that they couldn't give them away.  I had them stacked in my basement 'cause I couldn't stand to see them junked out.  I used several for low workbenches and I put some on stilts for proper workbench height.  As time passed they were piecemealed out to friends and the last few finally completed their trips to the land fill.

"Progress is our most important product" was an old GE slogan.  When the Bell System was junking those desks I would say, "Progress is our most important illusion."

I saved that desk for the very same reason many years ago.  I used it from time to time, but over the last 10 years it's just been in the way, in the garage.  So, I decided to CL it.  I was asking 15 dollars.  One person came out, paid me, and said they'd be back the next day.  I never heard from them again.  This went on for a while, still nothing.  I then put it out front at the curb with a free sign on it.  2 complete days, NOTHING.  So, I said to gosh with it and am now using it next to my grill as a multi-use table.  The top isn't fairing too well at the moment, varnish is pretty much gone and the veneer is lifting.  Oh well.  It'll still be good for maybe 2 years or so.

That's me you silly goat!  Here's a picture of my youngest with the speakers about 10 years ago.  He's 13 today.
