New Recipes, Men vs Women
« Reply #-1 on: March 14, 2014, 10:02:54 AM »
This is my observations of the difference between men and women when trying a new recipe. Men will generally take a new recipe and fix it the way it is presented and use the cooking method.

Women will take a new recipe and say it doesn’t need that, and omit it. It needs a little of this and a little of that. The cooking method she will do it completely her own way.

I like to try new recipes the way they are presented and then make adjustments the next time if I want. I can usually tell from the ingredients if I will like a dish. I do sometimes omit an ingredient if it is used in a small way and know I don’t like it. One ingredient I will not use are cloves, they are tooth ache medicine!
My Mother used clove oil for our tooth aches.

Cooking methods I do change the first time since I like to take recipes for meats and other dishes done inside and adapt them to BBQ for my Pellet Smoker or Gas Grill and will use my new Weber Smokey Joe some this summer.

My wife is the typical woman; I have been trying to tell her how to do things for 47 years now and she still does it all her way! I never will get that woman trained!  ::)  ;D Don

I tend to change or omit ingredients because I don't have them but still want to capture the general idea of a recipe.

Where Mrs. LVC and I differ is that I make all kinds of various recipes and she only knows how to make one, it's called "reservations".  ::)

My wife won't even let me talk to her (what I consider "making suggestions") while she is cooking.

I tend to follow the recipe the first time then make changes.  ;D

Right now I'm trying to improve on a Bruschetta recipe that I can't find. :(

I admit I am notoriously bad at following recipes most of the time.  It takes a concerted effort on my part to not throw in different things!!   I did, however, learn that from my father, who was the king of "creative cooking".  :)

Don, You are so right.  If you go to a website that allows comments on the recipes posted by the host you will read comments like the following by women:

"This recipe is not as good as you say it is. I made a few changes by eliminating the butter, changing the eggs to yourgut, substituted grape juice for the chicken stock, and basil for the thyme and it was nothing like you said.  I'm not going to do anymore of your recipes again."

or

"This recipe was great!  However, I did change a few things...."and then list five changes to include the main ingredient.

I always try to follow as close as possible the first time. If it is really good I usually stick to it.
