Glutens
« Reply #-1 on: September 19, 2014, 11:27:44 PM »
I found many times you are never too old to learn! I always thought glutens were people that ate too much! I don’t think I was the only one years ago that didn’t know what glutens were. More and more people are concerned with what they eat and their diets. I found out that glutens are actually in wheat and related grains and is high in proteins. It is what gives bread dough its elasticity, helps it rise and keep its shape and it is also added to foods that are low in protein. Some people are actually intolerant of gluten; so there are a lot of products now that are gluten free.

I bought my wife some gluten free rice krispies. She ate a bowl for breakfast and said those are terrible!
I tried some and they were terrible, we threw them out and bought some with glutens. I never knew that glutens were so good!  ;) Smokin Don

I don't eat much cereal (other than the occasional order of grits) so I may be missing something here but if they're RICE Krispies, where's the gluten?

They must be added to regular Keloggs Rice Krispies since the box I bought was next to the regular and said Gluten Free I just used a little common sense to figure that out  ;D

I am allergic to people who need everything in the world change because of their dietary restrictions.  And I am allergic to sesame of course.  Amazingly, I know how to read labels and ask questions.

There are some people who have a gluten allergy but many people have turned it into something else IMHO. That glutens are "bad" for you. People who are not allergic going along with the latest trend. Then corporations have jumped on this trend offering things that are gluten free. It becomes more of a health choice than an allergy.

Like the "naturally" cured products. Still using the same nitrates. But by using nitrates from celery they can label it "natural".

I also feel that MSG get's a bad rap. Not that there might be a small percentage of the population who are allergic to it but that there are so many people who have this idea that they are and it is so bad for you. Then the corporations jump on and start labeling everything that does not have MSG as a marketing strategy. People then think that MSG must be bad for you if the label says it is excluded.

Well I tried that common sense thing and finally found that the gluten in the original is from the barley malt used in the "2% or less of salt, malt flavor" in the ingredients. Who knew?

You got that right muebe, I hear so many people jumping on the gluten free bandwagon like it's the latest health trend and cure all.  One day I was at PF Chang's having lunch and requesting that my order not have things that have refined carbs. The waiter asked why I was wanting to exclude refined carbs, so I told him that I am diabetic and it spikes my glucose levels to high.  His response was: we do have a gluten free menu, as he proceeded to point to the gluten free section of the menu.  I figured if he was that misinformed about gluten, refined carbs, and diabetes that I would not have enough time to explain it to him.  So I ordered the spicy green beans and asparagus with a side of brown rice.
