I'm thinking to build an ethanol fire bowl. Any pointers?
« Reply #-1 on: March 18, 2015, 10:34:02 PM »
Thinking to use two different sized bowls. A large outer concrete bowl/planter, and a much smaller one filled with sand or fire glass in the middle to hold the ethanol. It'll be buried just below a layer of fire glass so that it appears that it's just a smooth layer of fire glass all the way across the larger bowl. Make sense?
I'm going to post a couple links to pics here in a minute to help get my idea across. I know that you can fill a soup can full of ethanol and light it and it just burns at the top (I always expect things to explode lol) so I'm thinking that a bowl full of fire glass with some ethanol poured in will work fine. Someone correct me if I'm asking for an ER visit here.

This dude ended up using ethanol for his idea in the end.

A shallow metal baking pan just below the glass would probably be more ideal. Want the fuel close to the surface.

Just had another idea (starting to feel like I'm talking to myself here)
I have an extra Weber kettle lid here that was leaking too much so they sent me a new one. I bet I could turn it upside down and incorporate it into this idea somehow. I've been wondering what to do with it.

I like the first photo but the internet is to slow to open the rest.

Good luck and post some pics of the finished product ;D

This looks like a very interesting project.  And fairly easy and inexpensive to boot.

Not familiar with a ethanol fire bowl so I don't know how helpful I would be.

Looks very cool.  If you take pics during the build, that would be even better.

I've been reading this stuff on building ethanol stoves and apparently using a wick of some sort is beneficial in a few ways, including reduced fuel consumption. I'm going to use a piece of carbon felt laid right inside the pan that I ambusing to contain the fluid. Home Depot did not have any fire glass, so I may be stuck with lava rock for testing. Hoping to test the idea this morning or at some point today.

I built my own fire pit that uses natural gas. I found a great deal for fire glass shipped from Amazon. Sometimes they will have bags for a cheap price and prime shipping.

If you decide to buy fire glass check them out.
