I love it Hub!
When I was doing my article on tailgating grill safety a few years back I came across a guy on the web that when finished put his still lit charcoal grill in the trunk of the car. Well he took out a few cars that day including his own. Maybe he watched the above video & figured if he closed the trunk the fire would go out
I interviewed a guy that ran security for a major sports team & he said charcoal grills are a big problem under gas tanks. Well I went to his stadium & when finished making my steaks I asked one of his agents walking by. "Excuse me sir what can I do with this grill of mine as it still hot & I am going into the game"? Well it took him about thirty seconds of deep thought & he said just put it under the back of your car"
Minimum Wage!
Look we all make mistakes & break rules but there is no excuse for the above.
I will be up front.
1) My charcoal grill is around seven feet from my house.*
2) My gas grill is around three feet from my house. *
3) My big easy around five feet*
4) my pizza oven around 10 feet.
I do not do the soap & water test every time I light my grill. I do it a couple of times a year But I do open the top when lighting & I do a smell test every time.
I do have a fire extinguisher close by as well as a sink with water & some sand in a bag just in case I need it.
* Charcoal grill should be 10 feet & I guess a gas should be at least six feet.
I do have three ways to escape & keep an outdoor phone with me. I also watch the grills. I do not smoke my food so it is not on for many hours at a time. I also keep my alcohol intake down when grilling. The grills are far enough away from my guests that kids are not a problem but the talkers do find you LOL. I do put the pizza oven in the dining area as I think it is fun to make the pizzas with your guests.
Also the bar is not next to the grill area as I see that as a problem.
When tailgating my gas grill swings out about five feet from the car & I put a fire extinguisher right within reach. same with the fryer & Butane. I never ever leave the tailgating grill as too many things can happen at an event.
