Gotta admit that's the first time I've ever actually seen anyone too stupid to close a grill splash water on a grease fire (and video it so the rest of the world can see).

I was sitting here watching it, and practically screaming, "Close the lid...  CLOSE...  THE...  LID!!!"   :D

 :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D

This is a video of the actual "Chuck" of whom I wrote a series of stories years back.  Here's the first one:

The rest are on the very first page of the "Humor" section.

I love it Hub!

When I was doing my article on tailgating grill safety a few years back I came across a guy on the web that when finished put his still lit charcoal grill in the trunk of the car. Well he took out a few cars that day including his own. Maybe he watched the above video & figured if he closed the trunk the fire would go out

I interviewed a guy that ran security for a major sports team & he said charcoal grills are a big problem under gas tanks. Well I went to his stadium & when finished making my steaks I asked one of his agents walking by. "Excuse me sir what can I do with this grill of mine as it still hot & I am going into the game"?  Well it took him about thirty seconds of deep thought & he said just put it under the back of your car"  ??? ??? ???

Minimum Wage!

Look we all make mistakes & break rules but there is no excuse for the above.

I will be up front.

1) My charcoal grill is around seven feet from my house.*

2) My gas grill is around three feet from my house. *

3) My big easy around five feet*

4) my pizza oven around 10 feet.

I do not do the soap & water test every time I light my grill. I do it a couple of times a year But I do open the top when lighting & I do a smell test every time.

I do have a fire extinguisher close by as well as a sink with water & some sand in a bag just in case I need it.

* Charcoal grill should be 10 feet & I guess a gas should be at least six feet.

I do have three ways to escape & keep an outdoor phone with me. I also watch the grills.  I do not smoke my food so it is not on for many hours at a time. I also keep my alcohol intake down when grilling. The grills are far enough away from my guests that kids are not a problem but the talkers do find you LOL. I do put the pizza oven in the dining area as I think it is fun to make the pizzas with your guests.

Also the bar is not next to the grill area as I see that as a problem.

When tailgating my gas grill swings out about five feet from the car & I put a fire extinguisher right within reach. same with the fryer & Butane. I never ever leave the tailgating grill as too many things can happen at an event.

It is fun to watch and laugh at some of these videos - thank goodness when no one is hurt. But Tailgating's review of his grills made me think. Mine are far too close to the house, on a wood deck (most of them), and various other calamities just waiting to happen. I, like many others, started with the best of intentions. But, as time went by, with no problems, I became more lax.

Again, this was posted as humor, but is also a good reminder that we are playing with fire and need to be careful.

Thanks!

Dave is right but when I visit other houses I see some amazing things with grills. Same on TV with Chefs that use the same utensils for everything from raw too cooked & back again.

I think it was Capt Jack that had an undercooked piece of pork a few years ago that almost did him in. I think he was hurting for a few weeks.

Again, we can't all be perfect all the time but we can stack the odds in our favor with a little Thomas Paine in our lives.

When I watched the above video it got me thinking about looking at my setup again. Stay Safe Folks!

Funny side story: My wife worries!  The other night at 2:00am the CO detector started to chirp down stairs. So she went downstairs to check it out.. Why her? I was in a deep.... sleep one of those good ones you have once every couple of months or so. Yes I was dreaming about her ;)  Well she comes up with it & tries to put in new batteries & all of a sudden the thing is in alarm mode :'( :'( :'( :'(    So I say honey take the batteries out & I will look at it in the am.........She says but the alarm was going off downstairs. SHE SAID go down & take a look.

I said forget it honey I am still sleeping ........at the moment at least.

She would have been right but I love safety so she was not.   How/Why

We don't have a large house at all but we have eight (8) CO detectors in our house different years & different models.

I said Honey if seven are not chirping & one is I am not worried. ;D ;D So go back to sleep & I will look at it in the morning...So I rolled over & I went to sleep knowing we were safe.

I put a portable CO detector. In my car for the tailgating tent when I use one.

I have sixteen smoke fire detector also.....three that are portable.

So I find out in the morning she had put the batteries in the wrong way LOL   First set had died!
