Mini Aquaculture Kit Update
« Reply #-1 on: March 03, 2017, 11:18:46 AM »
Spud's aquaculture project has always intrigued me, so when I saw this mini kit for sale on WOOT the other day I jumped on it. We use a lot of fresh herbs in our kitchen so this will be handy and hopefully save a few bucks to boot! So often we buy a pkg or two of fresh herbs, use half, and when we go to use again they have gone bad. Cutting as we need should work out better!
I'm hoping to find time this weekend to set this up. I'll do a follow-up.

Ok last night cleaned everything by rinsing with hot water. Filled the tank and added a de-chlorinator. Let sit overnight. Had to work a half-day today, but after work went to a local pet shop to get a betta fish and a plastic plant. After aclimating to the water temp * Gil was set free and fed, while the rest of this system's growing pods got set up. Seeds are soaking to be planted this evening. Two pods will be wheatgrass and one of radish sprouts. After first harvest I can then start herbs.

* We watched What About Bob, the Bill Murray movie the other night. He had a pet fish named Gil, so....our fish is now Gil!  :D

A little update. The last thing that I did this past Saturday was to get the betta fish acclimated to the tank, and to presoak seeds. I laid down....and had a heart attack! Tuesday I got discharged and got home. First thing I did was feed the hungry fish and resoak some seeds. Tuesday evening I sowed my seeds! Lol Here's a couple pics of the progress.Gil is keeping the nutrients flowing!

Okay here we are on Sunday March 12, 5 days after seeding the grow pods for the first time. They seem to be progressing well! Radish sprouts on the left, and the two to the right are wheat grass.  These two different plants are fast growing. Once harvested I may begin to grow herbs such as basil, oregano etc.
But until the long-growth roots project outside the pods, I need to keep one pod of fast growing seeds, as the roots are a big part of the filtration process. To be continued...
