Where to get meat?
« Reply #-1 on: February 01, 2020, 01:17:45 PM »
Living right outside Philly the selection of meats to smoke are not wonderful.  Was wondering if anyone can recommend butcher's that ship so I can get pork belly and higher quality ribs & butts.

I have tried Porter Road and their stuff was ok.  Just looking for some other options.

snake river farms is one.

Restaurant Depot is located in the Philly area. This place requires a retail license to be a member. However, if you join the Kansas City BBQ Society for $40 a year, you can go to Restaurant Depot as a guest.

Don't know if you have a Costco near you but he one near me has good brisket, ribs and pork bellies.

Actually just went to Restaurant Depot last week using a friends membership.  Not much selection and only pork belly was sold by the case.  I would not go through that much belly in a year.

I go to BJ's and they are ok for ribs and butts but I was looking for belly really.  My local supermarket had belly for a couple months but then stopped selling it.

Then you may want to join Costco. The one near me has excellent pork belly

As GusRobin says, Costco is the way to go.  I make my own bacon and get my pork bellies from Costco.  The Costcos around me also have prime briskets, butts, and spare and baby backs to name a few.  Great selection and great meat...well worth the price of membership.

The Restaurant Depot that I frequent has a good supply of meat. If you have a business license or a friend that does, RD will make as many scan cards as you want. I have a business Costco in my area, and they have bulk meats by item or case like RD does. The bulk pricing is better that the retail Costco, less than a mile away, even if you're not buying by the case. (like one chuck roll, or a 3-pack of babybacks, etc)The business Costco also has cryovac packs of peeled trim-tip that have about 8 tris to a pack. I've heard that tri-tip is not available in your area though. More of a west coast thing.

Don't overlook Sam's Club.  They have some good quality meats, especially since they started sponsoring BBQ events.  I have had excellent luck with their pork butts, BB ribs, spare ribs, and Angus beef of different cuts.

Where outside of Philly? I too am in the Philly burbs and I have 2 places I can go to for any meat smoking related.  One is is Plymouth Meeting($$), the other is in Glenside($). ($ for choice brisket pricing, although the PM butcher has black angus).  Costsco is decent, but they have swift pork products, and personally they aren't as good at Hatfield pork.  Wegmans has pretty good pork butts, if you don't go to a butcher.

Yet another one for Costco, though even Sam's Club has the occasional find.  If you're wanting mail order, I can vouch for Porter Road and Lobel's (though pricey).  Snake River Farms for beef is always a safe bet.

I am in the Feasterville-Trevose area.  Either Glenside or Plymouth Meeting would work.  Can you provide the details of the places you use?

Glenside: Joe's Meat Market- Heinz, and his children Ralph and Monica will take of you. Cash or Check only!! 2770 Jenkintown Rd, Glenside, PA 19038

Plymouth Meeting: Venezia Meats, Carl and his crew are great, have a ton of different cuts, even some I've never heard of.  They supply some restaurants so the USDA is in there every day.  A little pricer than Joe's but in my opinion it is worth it. Take everything, cash card, check, SNAP. 1007 Germantown Pike, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462

Both are near turnpike exits, Joe's is easiest from Virginia Drive if you have EZ pass, and Venezia is up Germantown pike (west bound) from Norristown exit.  Both also have fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas if you pre-order them.

You should be able to get pork belly if you have any decent Asian markets around you
