My uncle had to contract out his blade sharpening for his zamboni blades because it was too expensive for the tariffs into Canada. The tariffs are there to protect Canadian businesses from outside competition but the issue is that many of these industries are no longer in Canada at all.
Canada has 8,192 tariffs categories & each have 18 tariff treatments. They charge 18% on hockey pants coming into Canada that are no longer even produced in Canada. So in that case there is no manufacturing to protect.
These costs get passed onto Canadians but most never notice when buying goods from a Canadian retailer due to they have already been tariff charged and included into the price.
