Root it so you can put a proper backup program and ad blocker on (Titanium Backup and AdAway are my personal choices for those two apps).  I am a LONG time Android user currently on a Sprint Galaxy S4.What kind of apps did you have on you iPhone?  One thing to start with is the Amazon Appstore.  They do a free paid app every day (you just need to keep the Appstore loaded on your device).

I would look at a few things before rooting your device:

1. are you comfortable/competent enough to do so?

2. Will rooting your phone void the warranty on it?

3. Will rooting it affect your ability to get tech support from the carrier it is on?

4. If your phone is an un-locked version - all bets are off and have fun!
