35 Years Ago Today
« Reply #-1 on: February 22, 2015, 07:36:03 PM »
One of those rare events where I will never forget where I was and who I was with.

Team USA at Lake Placid. Taking on the hated Soviet Union.

Several Minnesota players, and of course our own Herb Brooks. This game still means a lot in the hockey capital of the U.S.

Greatest sport event in my lifetime!

Pappy I might add that the high feeling after winning was magnified by what what going on politically at the time. Just imagine the low if we had not won!

Very true! Country was really in the tank. I was only 11, but I knew we were in need of something to feel good about

Hockey is not real big here in Alabama but I was glued to the TV and standing up cheering. I have enjoyed hockey ever since.

I remember that game.  I wanted to watch it because I just knew we could win.  I lived in the DC area at the time.  One of the local news anchors ruined the whole thing.  She announced the outcome before we could watch it.  She came under a firestorm of protest for having announced the outcome before the game was telecast.  She was ripped in the press for several years after for this "miscue".  IMHO, she should have been FIRED!

So that's why one of the networks was televising a documentary about that game today. They were showing how badly the Soviet team got treated when they returned home for only bringing home a silver medal.

Absolutely correct on all counts.

International rules allow a team to suit up 20 players.  About a dozen of them were from Minnesota.  I saw many of them play their high school hockey.

But the game winner was scored by team captain Mike Eruzione (the "ahtist"), from Boston.  I don't have to close my eyes to "see" that shot.

Eruzione's father was a bartender.  Patrons took up a collection so he could travel to see his son play.  I don't think Mike's mother was there.

Driving in to work this a.m. Mike O'Callahan from the US team was interviewed on wscr. He mentioned that in 1979 Soviets' Nat. team beat the NHL All-Stars 6 - 0. And in the last exhibition game before the Olympics,  the Soviets beat Team USA 10 - 3! The Soviets were thought to assume an easy victory in Olympic play because of this!
