Title: Turkey Day Results
Post by: MoHuka on December 01, 2013, 01:40:15 PM
I tried my first Turkey in the SRG for Thanksgiving and learned a few things and now can answer questions I have seen on the forum.  How big of a turkey will fit in the SRG?
19.8 pounder

What about brining?  I used this I found at Bed, Bath and way out there...when I boiled it on the stove to dissolve the salts and sugars the whole house smelled like roasted turkey
World Market Turkey Brine

In for the ride...Pecan smoke on the roll

Lesson learned - rotate turkey at least once through the cook..I had one place in the breast that was under cooked....guests said the breast was the best and juiciest they had ever eaten
Tommy (aka TMB) is helping me with the smoke...I have the Tommy Ring, the holes in the smoke box and have added a vent to the top..I did not get much smoke on this one but the bird did have a nice light smoke taste
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day..I certainly did

what was in the brine?

I have ditched the package RAD but got this off Google search

With the best in natural ingredients like sea salt, raw sugar, cranberries, sage, juniper, rosemary, orange peel and more

That brine sounds great! I bet that turkey came out great! I haven't ventured into the
SRG or Big Easy world YET... Still trying to convince SWMBO about getting a PBC.. 8)

I learned the rotate lesson too on my first bird in the SRG this week.

How long did it take to cook that bird?

MoHuka,
Glad your turkey day turned out so well.  I used a similiar brine from Williams Sonoma, had to boil it, cool it and then brined two turkey breasts for 24 hours.  Best turkey I ever had although doing two at the same time took longer than anticipated, I was about 40 minutes long on the cook, but in the end it was worth it.  I only got a small plate of leftovers, everyone else took leftovers with them.

Want to try a brisket next, but I'm a little apprehensive

Great looking cook
Happy Holidays

Glad you were able to be home for T-Day Greg. Turkey looks like it fit right in the SRG.
