For The Older Generation

Nice post Devo!
It reminds me of a quote by the former-infamous-former-governor of Pappy's state, Minnesota. The honorable Jesse "the body" Ventura once said, "Learn from history or you're doomed to repeat it!"

Did you do it with the Jesse voice? This state really elects some winners.....

I think ole Jesse was just repeating that quote, as I heard it attributed to George Santayana.

All those thing plus a few others .....like drawing water from a well and washing on a wash pot outside. Ice box instead of a refrigerator. How about plowing with a mule instead of a tractor.

Plus cooking on a wood burning stove, hauling water from a mountain creek (outside the house) and heating for a warm bath. We also didn't have freezers, we had a root cellar to keep things cold. Oh and who can forget the outhouse since we didn't have a toilet inside the house.  I remember those days well! And you know what, sometimes I miss the simple things we used to do years ago. Everything is go, go, go nowadays, but my go, go, go is gone and I am hoping when I retire in 23 days I can go back to some of the simpler things in life. But of course I will still keep my cell phone, computers and bathroom!  ;)

Crap I'm OLD  ???   I remember all those things.   One TV in the house, heck my Dad made our TV from Heath Kit cause the store bought were so high.  We used the boxes that the parts came in as storage units  ;)   A/C was opening the windows on a nice day or turn the attic fan on.

This generation wouldn't know what to do without their cell phones or TV/computers

It is funny to watch kids go nuts when the power goes out  ;) ;) ;) ;)

Its nice to have power back ups.I like those electric lights. And refers and freezers staying on.Trying to avoid the caveman option.

Tho I had a neighbor whose food got ruined when power was out.In a snowstorm....think about it.Just needed to put it on the porch. The whole town was a freezer. ::)

My freezer is in the garage, I unplug it from Dec- Mar. No need to run the power when mother nature helps out.

How's about growing up on a ranch, MILES from your nearest neighbor.   We had electricity all right, BUT, it was 24 volt--four six volt batteries ganged together, charged by the windmill, which also pumped our water to a cistern in the "back room" behind the kitchen.   Went out and hand pumped the water for the kitchen and bathrooms.   Had toilets, but no running water in the house   When you had done your business, you picked up the bucket, dumped it in the toilet to "flush" it, then YOU went and refilled the bucket so the next one would have it available.   The electricity lasted four hours after dark, IF you were lucky.   So, you went to bed pretty much when it got dark, got up with the sun.   Yes, we had a refrigerator, but it was butane powered.   No phone, much less a cell phone!  No TV--got a battery powered radio that I loved, but the battery corroded and ruined the whole durn thing.   Lots of good things to be said about all the above   Life was certainly much simpler, and we didn't know any different, so, no complaining.

Yep, we recycled and re-tasked a lot of stuff back in the day before the world shifted to disposable plastic junk.

And for all their "green" talk, let these youngsters go without their electronic toys for a day and it's like their world is in total crisis.   Much less let the power go totally out for a few days after a big storm.  Something to be said for a real book when that fancy e-reader battery dies.

And we used to hunt, fish, and can or other wise store crops we grew for the rest of the year.  Now days the grocery store only stocks about 1.5 day's worth of stock and if the trucks stop rolling the "greenies" would flat out starve to death.  Oh yeah, us old farts didn't know anything about being "green"......  (we just called it frugal)
