Is my probe bad?
« Reply #-1 on: March 08, 2015, 10:49:51 AM »
Doing my pastrami cook today. My Maverick pit probe temp is jumping around like crazy. Big swings by the minute. I have fresh batteries in both ends of the Maverick.
Only thing left is the probe

Thoughts?

Probably a bad probe or it has moisture in it.  I have also seen them jump like that when they are bent too much while in the pit.

Moisture got in it.

Leave it in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes and see if the moisture clears out.

If that does not work probably bad connection on the probe.

I've had to replace a couple of Maverick probes.   They're not expensive.

Plus the replacements come with longer wires, which I see as a benefit.

Last time I ordered a probe for the Maverick - you could choose a 3 ft. or a 6 ft. wire....There is a price difference, but it is not a deal breaker - the longer wire really helps prevent a "meltdown" ;) ;D

Same here. I love the longer wires. I tried the oven thing on the one giving me issue but those plastic/rubber ends didn't like it  ???

I kinda have buyer's remorse for not getting the Maverick, solely for the remote monitoring feature.

I've been trying for two days not to say this, but can't resist.  The older the probe, the greater the tendency there is to have trouble with it.   ::)

Yep, I dig my Thermoworks probes (I use a Dot and a ChefAlarm). They are super-accurate, I just wish I could chill on the couch while monitoring the cooker and meat temps.

Maybe Thermoworks will come out with a dual channel remote transmitter someday... I still might buy a Maverick one of these days...

For what it's worth, I found that the Thermoworks probe 362XX (still avail. for $8) works with my MAK.  They use the same thermistor.
