A Question for the Masses of LTBBQ
« Reply #-1 on: October 20, 2015, 07:01:46 PM »
Nutshells......is there any smoking value in them?  We use hickory wood to smoke, but never have heard or read about shells. I have been sparring against a few squirrels for black walnuts lately and just thought that there's an awful lot tossed after the nut is taken. Thoughts while sipping a dark ale on the deck.......  :o

I've heard that smoking with shells does a good job; however, I think that walnut maybe strong but I could be wrong.  Best way to find out is to try.  You won't fail. You will either find something that works or you will find something that doesn't work.  Dee

Pecan shells work fairly well Gene. I agree with Dee that walnut is real strong.

Black walnut is stronger than Mesquite....
Strangely tho - if you mix Black Walnut or Mesquite with a nice sweet  fruit wood ( cherry, peach, apricot...or even apple ) it can be awesome on chicken or pork.
BBQ is neither verb or noun. It is an experience.

There are not enough squirrels in Ohio to eat all the black walnuts in our yeard..so hubby had tree cut down. You had to pick them up before you mowed and he finally had enough, he's gonna be 80 in a month. Pretty tree tho..to bad for me.  .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

I know that walnut shells burn very hot!

There is a cement plant that uses them in a kiln to dry the concrete during production. They get them from rail cars directly from the train track next to the plant.
