Good bye George Jones.

As far as I am concerned there was only two male country singers: Haggard and Jones...all the others are second fiddle........

He was one of the last true country singers, not like most of the "pop" country singers today.

Today's country is watered down pop music. I watch Tru Country and Midwest Country on RFD-TV to hear some good steel guitar and fiddle music.......

I was lucky to see the "Legends" tour back in 1991:

Merle Haggard
George Jones
Conway Twitty

Just too much good music to hear in one sitting.............

To me, Hag is the greatest "country" singer ever and the only one that I ever actually refer to as country most of the time.  All the rest (even the ones I love) are to some degree a hybrid of other styles.  I won't even get started on "pop country" as I don't understand how including the word country in the description of 99.99% of what is recorded today is still occurring.

I think the last couple of pretty traditional country (not alt country or Texas or any other hybrid - just traditional country) artists that I would generally classify as such are George Strait, Randy Travis and [old] Alan Jackson.

George Jones is almost definitely the greatest country vocalist ever IMO.  His versatility was simply amazing.  Going from the old style upbeat stuff like "The Race is On" or "White Lightning" to the ballads is no small task, and he did it better than anyone.  He also is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) harmony vocalists that the genre has ever seen.  I have been playing and singing for over 30 years, and George was one of those folks that you just revered for his talent.

RIP George.  You've earned the break.

What I am really hating is this trend toward Country Rap or Crap for short.

No kidding.  David Allan Coe doing his Kid Rock thing is just painful to watch.

i hope this doesn't offend you Possum fans....for which I am many! Last night at supper my Daughter was home from college and asked me about George Jones....told her how great he is and all that. The only man who could take a 52 letter alphabet and make 250!
Yoder 1320, 3- VUDS's and a couple of Wally World  grills. Working on more all the time.

I remember when George Jones had this song out. I wonder if he realized he was the equal of those he was singing about.
